Germination Traits of Adriatic Lizard Orchid (Himantoglossum Adriaticum) in Hungary

Abstract: Abstract:The germination of the orchids is the most sensitive period of their life. In case of the extremely rare Himantoglossum adriaticum in Hungary, no such information has been published yet. Our aim is to present the results of the in situ and the ex situ germination of H. adriaticum seeds originate in West Hungary. There were 10-10 seed packets sowed 10-20 cm far-, and 3-3 as control 10 m away from the living mother plants on the natural habitats of Keszthelyi-hills and of Sümeg-Tapolca region. The succe… Show more

“…However, our results are consistent with previous research showing a very low germination percentage in the laboratory for H. adriaticum (1.3%; Gilián et al . ). Our results are also in line with the findings of Carey & Farrell () for the congeneric species H. hircinum , in which a long‐term experiment demonstrated a similar germination percentage in the field (~5% in the first year, even with mycorrhizal infection).…”

“…At the Hungarian sites of Keszthely and Sümeg respectively the germination rate was 50.3% and 39.9% in close proximity to the living plants but only 19.4% and 3.5% respectively in the control packets, which were placed 10 m from the living plants ( Fig. 13; Gilián et al, 2018). According to microscopic observation, the symbiosis between the fungi and the orchid protocorm starts soon after the appearance of the white protocorm bearing rhizoid hairs but before shoot initiation (Gilián et al, 2018).…”

“…The establishment of a sustainable society depends on macro-level (law, political will, consensus, public support) and micro-level conditions (affecting the everyday operation of individuals, families, companies, and small communities). When scientists make an effort in order to save, for example, an endangered species [4,5], they might not consider this abovementioned complexity of the whole problem, which would make the work necessary.…”
