Geriatrischer Ultraschall

Abstract: In geriatric patients, ultrasound is the appropriate diagnostic technique to detect and to follow-up underlying and accompanying diseases of the heart, lung, liver, kidneys, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract and of arterial and venous vessels. Based on a systematic survey of the published literature, this review describes the value of ultrasound in geriatric patients focussing on point of care.

“…The main disadvantages and limitations are the small screen size (the CDI window cannot be changed during Vscan™ exam-ination to cover the whole area of a larger lesion) and lack of pulse-wave and continuous Doppler to evaluate the blood flow velocities. It has to be pointed out that CDI plays a crucial role in the differential diagnosis of abdominal focal lesions [2,[80][81][82][83][84].…”

“…The possible role of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in geriatric patients was summarized in a review by Schumacher et al [9,10] and the limited existing literature has recently been summarized [8]. Due to the documented lack of data, we proposed that geriatric POCUS should be evaluated in a prospective study as presented here [8].…”

“…In contrast to the above-mentioned disciplines, evidence regarding the diagnostic impact of ultrasound examinations in geriatric patients is scarce [8]. The possible role of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in geriatric patients was summarized in a review by Schumacher et al [9,10] and the limited existing literature has recently been summarized [8].…”

“…bubble tetrahedral complex (four air bubbles arranged in a tetrahedron formation and trapping a bugle-shaped column of fluid within), in response to insonating US, creates the RDA [11]. Morphologically, the RDA is a linear artefact in the axis of the insonated ultrasound wave that starts from the point of origin and "ringsdown" to the end of the screen without fading.…”
