Geotechnical Engineering Aspect Related to Pidie Jaya–Aceh Earthquake Disaster and Mitigation

Abstract: Earthquake catastrophe in Pidie Jaya has caused damages to the city of Meureudu, Aceh-Sumatra Indonesia. Based on preliminary study for buildings and infrastructures, the geotechnical engineering aspects damages-related are presented. Seismic motion effect damage of earthquakes such as liquefaction of soil, lateral spreads, and ground failure were the majority effect for infrastructures and buildings. Moreover, failures of almost of multi-storey buildings and mosques along the national road lines are because t… Show more

“…From the test results it can be seen that the average specific gravity of the quarry soil samples originating from Aceh Besar District has silt or clay soil types. Where according to Munirwansyah (2018) soil that has cohesive properties such as clay soil has properties that are very sensitive to the influence of water content and has high shrink-swell properties, soil conditions like this can affect the carrying capacity of the soil [4].…”

“…Soils of this type generally contain minerals that have high swelling potential, and can be called expansive soils. This test is carried out by preparing a sample of the test object, the test object has been compacted with a hummer and placed in a mold as a sample container, the ready sample is soaked in water for 4 days and readings are taken at certain times to get the value from the dial used to measure ground elevation [4].…”

“…Visually, this cohesive soil is not good to apply in road piles or buildings since cohesive soils have high shrinkage growth and weak bearing capacity. The condition of Aceh Province that is prone to earthquakes and earthquake-related disasters, as mentioned [14]- [15] require good construction materials to reduce failure possibility of construction and the achievement of the life expectancy of construction in accordance with the plan. Furthermore, planning based on security risk analysis must be applied to earthquake-prone areas [16].…”

“…As a tropical country, Indonesia has a high risk of geological disasters and landslides each year, particularly during the rainy season [2] and [3]. The Indonesian government has made measures to mitigate the risk of road damage, including enhancing road geometry, reinforcing slopes, and rehabilitating eroded soil [4] and [5]. However, this appears insufficient to address road slope degradation, as field evidence indicates that cracks and landslides caused by erosion continue to occur on the surface of road slopes [6].…”
