Geotechnical Design of Bucket Foundations

Abstract: The successful installation of the Europipe 16/llE Riser jacket in July 1994 and the coming installation of Sleipner T jachzt in spring 1996 proves that suction installed skirted plate foundations (buckets), may not only be a competitive alternative to piles, but also a complementaryfoundation solution both for noncohesive and hesive soils. This paper presents the background for the d.exign analyses of the Europipe 16/llE and Sleipner T foundations in terms of the performed field and model te… Show more

“…Passive suctions have been relied on in practice in the design of some skirted foundation systems, but in each case the project was based on extensiveˆeld, experimental and analytical studies (Støve et al, 1992;Dyvik et al, 1993;Tjelta and Haaland, 1993;Bye et al, 1995). A better understanding of the development and dissipation of passive suctions within skirted foundations would lead to e‹ciencies in design of current skirted foundation systems in terms of reducing foundation size and extending the period over which passive suctions can be relied on.…”

“…Bang and Cho [2] believed that the strength of the even ground is linearly increasing with the depth for the soft clay ground and the undrained horizontal bearing capacity can be solved using ultimate equilibrium method. Bye et al [3] used the sliding surface method the analyze the bearing capacity of the suction caisson. In the calculation, the foundation can be transferred into an equivalent rectangle and its area and processional moment is the same with the circular bottom.…”

“…This foundation concept has been adopted for decades in the oil and gas industry as an alternative to drilling or driving for anchoring mooring buoys (Senpere and Auvergne, 1982) or as a foundation for jackets (Bye et al, 1995). A picture of a monopod bucket foundation placed on the deck of an installation vessel is shown in Figure 1.…”
