Geospatial modelling for predicting the ideal free settlement of Rapa

Abstract: This paper describes a geospatial model that was developed to be the basis for applying models from human behavioural ecology (HBE). Specifically, the logic of the ideal free distribution (IFD) is narrowed and applied to the post‐colonisation spread of intensive agriculture in order to predict the order and locations of its expansion. The island of Rapa, Austral Islands, is used to highlight the utility of this method. Rapa is an ideal location due to the prominent use of intensive irrigated taro agriculture a… Show more

“…The central idea of a Predictive model using Popper's Three-worlds theory has tremendous advantages over previous predictive models, including the most recent publications (Argyriou, Teeuw, and Sarris 2017;Carleton et al 2017;Oğuz-Kırca and Liritzis 2018;Eftimoski, Ross, and Sobotkova 2017;Cohen et al 2017;Lane 2017;Healey et al 2017) and theoretically it can constitute a guide for future models of Archaeological Sites Prediction.…”

“…The land cover dynamics of Santa Cruz Island conform with behavioral ecology models on the human colonization of islands. Such models were developed to explain settlement patterns in the Pacific and Caribbean regions, and case-studies included work on East and South Polynesia [112], California's Northern Channel Islands [113,114], the southern Lesser Antilles of the Eastern Caribbean [115,116], Rapa, and the Austral Islands [117]. These models postulate that the first permanent settlements occur in areas that are considered to be most suitable because of water availability, climate, soil quality, and food resources [34,39].…”

“…This means that animals freely occupy their environments in a way that ideally maximises payoff in relation to resource exploitation and competition (Fretwell & Lucas, 1969; Cassini, 2013; Krebs, 2014). The IFD has been investigated in aquatic (Giannico & Healey, 1999; Maszczyk et al ., 2018) and terrestrial species, including invertebrates (Agnarsson, 2003, 2011; Hendrickx et al ., 2013) and vertebrates (Haché et al ., 2013; Lane, 2017), and even plants (McNickle & Brown, 2014).…”
