The aim of this paper is to create and present a new archaeological predictive model via GIS, incorporating what archaeologists consider the most important criterion absent of similar past models, that of critical thinking. The new model suggested in this paper is named habitation Model Trend Calculation (MTC) and is not only integrates the archaeological questions with a critical view, but it can be easily adjusted, according to the conditions or the questions concerning the archaeological community. Furthermore, it uses new topographical and geomorphological indexes such as Topographical Index (TPI), Hillslope and Landform Classification that give a new sense of the topographical and geomorphological characteristics of the examined area; therefore this model is a more powerful tool compared to older models that did not use new topographical and geomorphological indexes. The success of the created model is checked as a case study in the region of Messenia, Greece during the Mycenaean era. The region of Messenia is considered as one of the most important Mycenaean regions of Greece due to the great number and the importance of Mycenaean sites identified. For the present paper, 140 habitation sites were divided into four hierarchical categories (centers, large villages, villages, and farms) based on the extent and the plurality of the tholos tombs that exist in the broader region and according to the hierarchical categorization used by the archaeologists who have studied the area. The new predictive model presented in this work can assist in solving a series of criticisms that have been expressed in the previous studies regarding such models. Additionally, in the case of Mycenaean Messenia, the model shows excellent results in relation to the habitats of the time.

Islands are particularly vulnerable to the effects of land cover change due to their limited size and remoteness. This study analyzes vegetation cover change in the agricultural area of Santa Cruz (Galapagos Archipelago) between 1961 and 2018. To reconstruct multitemporal land cover change from existing land cover products, a multisource data integration procedure was followed to reduce imprecision and inconsistencies that may result from the comparison of heterogeneous datasets. The conversion of native forests and grasslands into agricultural land was the principal land cover change in the non-protected area. In 1961, about 94% of the non-protected area was still covered by native vegetation, whereas this had decreased to only 7% in 2018. Most of the agricultural expansion took place in the 1960s and 1970s, and it created an anthropogenic landscape where 67% of the area is covered by agricultural land and 26% by invasive species. Early clearance of native vegetation took place in the more accessible—less rugged—areas with deeper-than-average and well-drained soils. The first wave of settlement consisted of large and isolated farmsteads, with 19% of the farms being larger than 100 ha and specializing in diary and meat production. Over the period of 1961–1987, the number of farms doubled from less than 100 to more than 200, while the average farm size decreased from 90 to 60 ha/farmstead. Due to labor constraints in the agricultural sector, these farms opted for less labor-intensive activities such as livestock farming. New farms (popping up in the 1990s and 2000s) are generally small in size, with <5 ha per farmstead, and settled in areas with less favorable biophysical conditions and lower accessibility to markets. From the 1990s onwards, the surge of alternative income opportunities in the tourism and travel-related sector reduced pressure on the natural resources in the non-protected area.

1. Understanding the distribution of organisms is a central issue in ecology. Some animal densities are directly determined by resource availability(i.e. the ideal free distribution model, IFD). Hence, animals freely occupy the available patches so that the payoff is ideally maximised according to resource exploitation and competition. Based on its assumptions, tests of the IFD should be made with animals presenting high motility and sensitivity to specific habitat characteristics. 2. This study demonstrates how traits from the plant community influence the distribution of two cobweb spiders, Helvibis longicauda and Chrysso intervales, on a forest understory. 3. Spider abundance was positively correlated to the availability of broadleaves (i.e. suitable sites) along patches. They show high topophilia (i.e. preferences based on microhabitat structural characteristics) for roof‐like leaves, which provide shelter to build webs underneath. Alternatively, higher numbers of pinnate fern fronds, a trait that is unsuitable to support the three‐dimensional webs of those species, translated to decreased abundance. Numbers of suitable and unsuitable sites were negatively correlated, indicating that their proportion on patches drives spider abundance. Finally, spider abundance along 22 suitable plant species was influenced by the number of microhabitats provided per species rather than by their phylogenetic identities. 4. We corroborate the IFD, demonstrating that simple consumer–resource relationships may occur on complex/multi‐species environments, such as forests. Dispersion and topophilic microhabitat selection may be driven by substrate availability and competition. Importantly, we provide insights based on the whole plant community, while previous evidence was limited to a single or a few species.
