The profitability of fertilizer‐N use can be optimized using N response functions specific to climate‐based technology extrapolation domains (TED). Crop growth simulation can complement field research for targeting of response functions. The objective of this study was to target maize (Zea mays L.) N response functions to seven TED in Ethiopia through CERES‐Maize simulation of continuous maize over 30 yr. The complete factorial set of treatments included seven levels of N in 25 kg ha−1 increments under no‐till (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) systems. The CERES‐Maize simulated experiments were done for two or three sites per TED. Nitrogen response functions were generated for each TED with tillage‐specific functions for three TED with tillage × N interactions. The N rate responses for all TED fit curvilinear to plateau functions but with differing magnitudes and shapes of response. The mean yield with NT was 6% less than with CT, but the difference declined with increased N rate. The economically optimum N rate (EONR) ranged from 65 to 179 and 103 to 243 kg ha−1 for high and low‐cost fertilizer‐N, respectively. The EONR was 6% less and the profit cost ratio was 11% higher with CT compared to NT, indicating greater fertilizer‐N need with NT than with CT. The application of N for maize was highly profitable for all TED. The EONR from CERES‐Maize were higher than past field research results. This suggests that the CERES‐Maize N response functions were most appropriate for well‐managed crop production situations in Ethiopia.

This forum paper provides a synthesis and discussion of 14 categories of lessons learned from experiences for achieving farm-level impact with smallholder farmers in Africa. These lessons were reported in a symposium hosted by the Agronomy in Africa community of the American Society of Agronomy. The lessons, listed in order of frequency of reporting, were the need to: have adequate infrastructure and services; enable spontaneous adoption; have multidisciplinary and institutional collaboration; build on previous adoption of good agronomic practices (GAP); have farmer participation in research; encourage and learn from smallholder adaptations; make GAP promotion demand-driven; allow GAP choices; address challenges and trade-offs to GAP adoption; enable GAP-by-GAP adoption; reconcile conflicting messages; offer adequate profit potential with acceptable risk; reduce labor needs, especially for women; and build capacity for farming system improvement along the chain from farmer to research. The lessons are discussed and conclusions are reported.

Системы земледелия, представляющие собой комплекс взаимосвязанных агротехнических, мелиоративных и организационных мероприятий, обеспечивающих эффективное использование агроландшафтов, сохранение и повышение плодородия почвы, а также получение высоких урожаев, рассматриваются как инструмент управления сельскохозяйственным производством, особенно актуальный в современных изменяющихся социально-экономических и природно-климатических условиях. Оптимизация таких систем в значительной степени строится на расчетах числовых значений параметров агроэкосистем и прогнозировании их динамики с применением математических моделей. В растениеводстве получили развитие статистические и динамические имитационные прогнозные модели. Последние модели более точные, адаптивные и позволяют описать развитие агроэкосистем при нестабильных климатических условиях и под воздействием различных агротехнических мероприятий. Математические модели широко обсуждаются в научной литературе по экологии, почвоведению, растениеводству. Основные проблемы регионального планирования систем земледелия на средне-и долгосрочную перспективу могут быть решены на основе моделирования в среде геоинформационных систем. Обзор подходов к прогнозированию продуктивности посевов на основе массовых расчетов по имитационной модели агроэкосистемы в геоинформационной среде позволяет определить, как можно их использовать для обоснования систем земледелия. При этом по пространственному охвату методы моделирования делятся на макромасштабные, мезомасштабные и микромасштабные. В общем случае для разных масштабов используются неодинаковые подходы. Для создания адекватной этим подходам универсальной среды массовых расчетов по динамическим моделям агроэкосистем для разных уровней пространственного охвата предлагается использовать соответствующие компьютерные оболочки для поливариантных расчетов-универсальную среду моделирования, для которой представлены требования для проведения расчетов по разным моделям от различных поставщиков. Решение проблемы формирования набора точек для расчета по модели состоит в том, что они должны находиться на возделываемых сельхозугодиях и адекватно представлять почвенные и климатические условия региона. Ключевые слова: агроэкосистемы, имитационное моделирование, массовые вычисления, прогнозирование, геоинформационные системы, системы земледелия.
