Geospatial Data Collection Policies, Technology and Open Source in Websites of Academic Libraries Worldwide

Abstract: The proliferation of geospatial data demands the engagement of information organizations, such as academic libraries, for their management and diffusion. The purpose of this paper is to reveal issues related to the development of geospatial collections and explore their efficient use as required by the current information environment. Thus, a research conducted on 363 websites of academic libraries worldwide and 136 websites maintaining geospatial collections were identified. The research questions were formed… Show more

“…Technology provides remote access to information resources to establish secure connections without the time and geographical constraints. Vardakosta and Kapidakis (2016) point out that the global financial crisis regarding technology in libraries required policies that are compatible with the current digital environment. Adkins and Moulaison Sandy (2019) discovered that the technology can support ordering and collecting more data, effectively access information and promote appropriate dissemination mechanisms for university libraries.…”

“…It helps to analyze logs created by real users for libraries during the actual library operating period to provide preliminary data for decision making when creating the library operating policy (Kim Increasing or decreasing reading trend et al, 2019). To make it easier for users to find the location of a library, this is useful not only in areas such as resource management, land use planning, environmental sustainability, population analysis, marketing, spatial assessment, forecasting, media planning and much more (Vardakosta and Kapidakis, 2016). The GIS-based map of the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the blue background shows the available public libraries, the green color indicates libraries under construction and the red color discloses that these areas do not yet have any libraries.…”

“…Librarians use GIS to collect, manage, preserve, access and analyze digital data and resources (Argentati, 1997; Ancona et al , 2004; Sedighi, 2012). They develop geospatial collections and explore their efficient use as required by the current information environment (Vardakosta and Kapidakis, 2016). Libraries also create visually appealing maps that show areas of heavy use and evidence of the use and value of the library for a community (Mandel, 2010).…”
