Geopolymer mortars based on natural zeolite

Abstract: Geopolymers based on Bulgarian natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) were synthesized using alkaline activators in order to prepare plaster/render mortar. The influence of the alkali concentrations of the activator solution was examined in regard to tensile strength and adhesion to concrete. Microstructure of the obtained geopolymer pastes was analysed by XRD, FTIR, SEM. The results showed adhesive strength to concrete up to 3.6 MPa and tensile strength up to 5.44 MPa. The present study shows a promising potential … Show more

“…can make a direct contribution of portlandite content in the AAM systems. Likewise, an insignificant amount of calcite (CaCO3) in the AAMs systems was observed possibly due to the reaction of calcium species with the carbon dioxide from air in presence of an aqueous alkali activator [70,78]. Similarly, the presence of zeolite phase was expected in these types of AAM systems.…”

“…The small band at about 1380 cm -1 was assigned to the nitrates that resulted from the preparation method of the calcium hydrolyzed nano-solutions [70]. A moderate intensity band occurred at 835 cm -1 , possibly corresponding to the Si-O bond symmetric stretching vibrations [78]. However, this vibration may have overlapped the signal at 830 cm -1 assigned to the bending mode of NO3 - [83,84].…”

“…Other important ratios, such as M₂O/SiO₂, M₂O/Al₂O₃, and H₂O/M₂O, also play significant roles in geopolymerization. The SiO₂/Na₂O ratio, for instance, affects mechanical properties and microstructure, while the Na₂O/Al₂O₃ ratio influences the dissolution of silica and alumina species [39,42]. The M₂O/H₂O ratio impacts the dissolution of aluminum and silicate species, thus affecting compressive strength.…”

“…The application of protective coatings to concrete surfaces is widely employed as a common method to prolong the lifespan of buildings and preserve the structural integrity of constructions within current engineering practices [9][10][11][12]. Geopolymer materials are a novel type of inorganic binder prepared through an alkali-silica/alumina reaction and are characterized by chemical resistance, strong adhesion, and environmental friendliness [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21], making them highly applicable in the formulation of protective coatings for concrete surfaces. In recent decades, extensive research has been conducted on the practical application of geopolymer coatings [7,[22][23][24][25][26], with sagging identified as one of the significant issues encountered in current applications.…”
