Geophysical validation of MIPAS-ENVISAT operational ozone data

Abstract: Abstract. The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), on-board the European ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) launched on 1 March 2002, is a middle infrared Fourier Transform spectrometer measuring the atmospheric emission spectrum in limb sounding geometry. The instrument is capable to retrieve the vertical distribution of temperature and trace gases, aiming at the study of climate and atmospheric chemistry and dynamics, and at applications to data assimilation and weather forecasti… Show more

“…Looking at the JJA maxima, we can see that at the ozone peak, the difference in vmrs between the processors can go up to 15%. Typically, around the ozone vmr peak, MIPAS observes more ozone than most correlative measurements (Cortesi et al, 2007;van Gijsel, Stammes, & Piters, 2013;Stiller et al, 2012). The processor having the smallest mixing ratio near the ozone peak, KIT, therefore has values that are closest to most correlative measurements (see Laeng et al, 2014;Laeng et al, 2012).…”

“…As it was derived, the behaviour of TOC indices reconstructed for all presented Eurasian regions for many centuries into the past is characterized by pronounced long-period variations, with the periods coinciding with cycles of solar activity. These variations for geographically widely spaced regions are out of phase due to spatiotemporal inhomogeneity of the TOC field at the middle and high latitudes, where ozone in the lower stratosphere plays the role of passive tracer of the atmospheric circulation (Varotsos et al 1982, Varotsos and Cracknell 1993, Kondratyev et al 1994, Chandra and Varotsos 1995, Gernandt et al 1995, Kondratyev and Varotsos 1995a, 1995b, 1996, Chandra et al 1996, Schulz et al 2001, Cortesi et al 2007). …”

“…There have been many experimental studies of vertical ozone distribution (e.g. Gernandt et al 1995, Reid et al 1998, Cortesi et al 2007). However, measurements in the upper stratosphere are not sufficient.…”
