“…This Nd isotopic boundary coincides with linear geophysical trends along much of its trace (Hinze et al, 1985;Hildenbrand and Kucks, 1992;Hildenbrand and Hendricks, 1995), including a pronounced northeast-trending geophysical anomaly near St. Charles, Missouri ( Figure 6). For simplicity, we collectively refer to these geochemical and geophysical features as the St. Charles lineament (SCL).…”

“…The Commerce geophysical lineament (CGL) was first identified as a series of narrow, discontinuous, northeast-trending magnetic and gravity highs extending for more than 400 km (Figure 1) from northeastern Arkansas to the Wabash River Valley (Hildenbrand and Hendricks, 1995;Langenheim and Hildenbrand, 1997). Inverse modeling of aeromagnetic and gravity data by Langenheim and Hildenbrand (1997) indicated that the source of these anomalies is a mafic dike swarm of unknown age and that the CGL is probably related to the parallel Reelfoot rift.…”

“…This high-velocity anomaly is not resolved in the S wave velocity models or in the P wave velocity model obtained using the C' starting model. In addition, there is no supporting evidence for the high-velocity feature in the gravity or magnetic anomaly maps for the region [Hildenbrand and Hendricks, 1995;Langenhelm, 1994]. The most plausible explanation for the high-velocity anomaly is that it is an artifact of the inversion performed using C as the starting model.…”

“…Whereas thrust events on the Reelfoot fault have been identified as the location for at least one of the large events in 1812 and 1450 [Carlson and Guccione, 2010], other large events are suggested to have occurred on the Cottonwood Grove fault, Bootheel lineament, and the New Madrid north fault [Hildenbrand and Hendricks, 1995;Johnston and Schweig, 1996;Mueller and Pujol, 2001], or outside the New Madrid seismic zone altogether [Hough et al, 2005]. The magnitude and return period of these earthquakes have been at the center of scientific debate in recent years.…”
