The stone monuments of Pasargadae (c.550 to 330 bce), Iran, represent a unique example of an advanced construction system that used stones as building materials. This study characterizes the mineralogical and chemical composition of these stones and determines their provenance. Five samples were obtained from buildings at Pasargadae and studied using optical microscopy (OM), X‐ray powder diffraction (QXRD), inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) and X‐ray fluorescence (XRF). Their chemical and mineralogical composition was determined using the Sr/Fe ratio and the amount of Ce, Dy, Er, Eu, Gd, La, Nd, Pr, Sm, Tb, Tm, Yb and Lu in order to investigate the provenance of the building materials. Seven additional samples were obtained from rock outcrops suspected of being the source of the rock and studied using the same techniques. A statistical principal component analysis (PCA) exhibited correlations between each data set. The data suggest that Abolverdi quarry west of Pasargadae served as the source for the light limestone used in the construction of the buildings, particularly the Tomb of Cyrus the Great. The Ahmad‐Beigi and Sarpaniran outcrops to the north‐east and south‐east are suggested as the sources of the dark limestone. The Sr/Fe ratio and the amount of rare‐earth elements distinguish the samples by means of different geneses.

In the last decade, increasing and develop of the scientific discipline such as science, engineering and medicine was considerable. With respect to this point of view, nowadays, comparative and interdisciplinary disciplines are also collaborated to each other. Archaeological investigations followed by related scientific methods would try to get answer to the problems which were mentioned by archaeologists due to the know-how in antiquity. Archaeometry means, the use of new instrumental, statistical methods for interpreting the technology based on collected archaeological data. In another word, archaeometry is a methodology for data management which has been collected via different expertise of each scientific discipline. Archaeometrical studies focus mostly on generate and development of common language for linking human science with another discipline such as science, engineering and medicine.

Archaeological exploration of Tappeh Hissar, Damghan using forward and inverse modeling of Ground-Penetrating Radar data

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) method is a non-destructive geophysical method that is used to detect subsurface heterogeneities and also recognition of various shallow targets. In present research, forward and inverse modeling of GPR data applied for archaeological study has been made. The study area is Tappeh Hissar, Damghan, in which GPR data along several survey lines have been acquired using 250 MHz shielded antenna for archaeological investigations. To achieve the goal, the real radar-gram of a survey line in the area has been obtained after applying different processing operations containing signal saturation correction and applying band-pass, auto-gain control and background re-moval filters on the GPR data using Reflexw software. Then, the synthetic radargram corresponding to the real radargram has been simulated using finite-different time domain (FDTD) method. After-ward inversion method with solution of an optimization problem was employed for validation of in-terpretation of GPR radargram in order to detect buried targets. The results of this research, that are based on the agreement between the radargram obtained from the real GPR data and the synthetic radargram corresponding to the real radargram, confirm the correctness of the interpretation of sub-surface archaeological investigations in the area, and thus, indicate the capability of application of GPR method for archaeological exploration.
