Geomorphological Evolution of the Sena Gallica Site in the Morpho-Evolutive Quaternary Context of the Northern-Marche Coastal Sector (Italy)

Abstract: The Sena Gallica Roman town was settled on the Adriatic coast in the 5th to 4th century BC. The choice of the site was largely influenced by the geomorphological and physiographic conditions near the Misa river mouth. The interactions among climate variation, river dynamics, and marine oscillation determined the anthropic development. At the same time, the new settlement strongly influenced the evolution of this sector in both medieval and in recent times. This work aims to highlight the geological setting and… Show more

“…The geomorphological and historic evolution of Rimini town and its surroundings is quite similar to that of some other Italian coastal cities (Dall'Aglio et al, 2017;De Donatis et al, 2019;Del Monte et al, 2016). The processes of the Upper Holocene are certainly the result of climatic deterioration but are also related to human intervention (Buckner, 1986;Vita-Finzi, 1969).…”

“…This trend has been detected in many Mediterranean urban areas (Brandolini et al, 2019;Reynard et al, 2017), especially the coastal ones which are the most sensitive, not only because they are the main areas of migration from the hinterland, but also because they are transition environments and therefore very responsive to climatic changes (Brandolini et al, 2017(Brandolini et al, , 2018. The Adriatic coast hosts many important ancient settlements dating back to the Roman Age and later times, in an area highly sensitive to Pleistocene-Holocene climatic changes (Nesci et al, 2012), especially in relation to river mouths deviations and, secondly, coastline variations (Dall'Aglio et al, 2017;De Donatis et al, 2019).…”

“…Pergola, known as the "city of hundred churches", has been inhabited since Prehistory, with the cultural heritage most extensively documented originating from the Roman period. The city of Senigallia has a rich historical background, as it was the first Roman colony to settle in the Adriatic coastal plain. In the realm of flood risk management, the origins of protective measures can be traced back to the early Roman settlements(De Donatis et al, 2019). Notably, the interventions were directed toward the construction of walls along the course of the Misa River, with the dual function of both military and flood defense of the Senigallia city.…”
