Geometrical modeling of near-net shape braided preforms

Abstract: Circular braiding has been successfully adapted for producing near-net shape structures for advanced fiber-reinforced composites. Net-shape manufacturing is significantly important for fabricating complex three-dimensional (3D) preforms. Geometrical modeling of braid patterns on 3D preforms plays a key role in determining their mechanical behavior. In this research work, the geometrical models of strand trajectory on the surface of cylindrical and conical mandrels with diamond, regular and triaxial braid patte… Show more

“…In the modeling works of several authors 1,5,11,12 appears a small mistake in the models of the regular braids only, recognizable by experienced braiders only. These cannot be produced on any ''classical normal'' maypole braiding machine with horn gears.…”

“…For the ones that drive in a clockwise direction, the sign of a/2 and the phase in the sinus function regions is changed. 11 Rawal et al 12 extend the equations for the case of a mandrel of conical cross-section and parts that consist of a combination of cylindrical and conical regions.…”

“…6 Simple geometrical models of strand paths have been extended to develop computer aided design (CAD) models of circular biaxial braids. [7][8][9][10][11] However, some of these models have neglected local sinusoidal variations. Nevertheless, the geometrical model of hybrid biaxial braids was proposed by considering the strand following a helical path.…”

“…By combining the accuracy of the optical Bragg grating sensor with 3D fabric modular processing in a braiding method [ 16 , 17 ] complicated structures can be measured, and the sensor application can be diversified by presenting the possibility of applying the fabrication to the monitoring measurement method. In the past, hard epoxy molding or epoxy adhesion have been applied for the application of the linear tensile stress–strain response fbg sensor.…”
