Geometrical Elaboration of Auxetic Structures

Abstract: This paper analyzes the basic geometric and kinematic characteristics of auxetic structures. The geometric principles are then transferred to a family of new possible forms. We investigate and elaborate auxetic behavior in a purely geometric way which is based on the kinematic movement of different frameworks. We then demonstrate its usefulness by analyzing the involved geometry with computer software but without computer simulations or numerical approximations. Instead, using cut flat material and, depending … Show more

“…For those properties, they have been often used in medical devices (stents), protective gear and gaskets. Reports have illustrated that the geometrical design is the main reason behind auxetic property [10,11]. The phase distribution and combination can be organized in order to produce an auxetic material, via the reaction between the host and fiber enforcement [12].…”

“…In work [22], the authors used thin, flexible flat ligaments attached to the squares from underneath, obtaining a physical prototype with auxetic properties. Three-layer hinges (upper and lower layers of rigid material, with an embedded flexible part in between) have been used in interconnected rigid and moving parts [23]. Other solutions involve forming a neck-like polymer part to connect the squares [24].…”
