Geometrical Analysis of Composite Hobs

Abstract: The paper presents the universal mathematical model-based geometric analysis of a composite hob with replaceable sintered carbide cutting inserts. Composite hobs are characterised by lower accuracy compared to monolithic hobs and are generally used in roughing. Based on a computational algorithm developed by the authors of this study a computer program has been created to model the position and the geometry of the cutting insert placed on the rake face. A generalised case of a composite hob with a flat rake fa… Show more

“…It should be noted that composite hobs are used only for machining gears up to Class 10 [8,15]. This is due to the lower accuracy of the hobs caused by problems with the correct positioning of the sockets' inserts, as explained by Piotrowski, Boral, and Gołębski [57]. Modern hobs can be used to machine virtually all gears made from machinable materials, including innovative materials used for special applications.…”

“…Piotrowski et al [19] presented a geometric analysis based on a universal mathematical model of a worm cutter with replaceable sintered carbide inserts. Based on the developed computational algorithm, an original computer program was created to model the position and geometry of cutting inserts positioned on the rake surface.…”

“…The accuracy of the machined gear to the greatest extent depends on the technology and tool used, which can be guaranteed by the use of common tools such as modular hobs, while an even greater increase in the accuracy of these tools will allow for wider use of multipurpose universal CNC machine tools, as investigated by Piotrowski et al [ 3 ]. These are special and usually expensive tools, and the machining is carried out on special machines.…”
