Geometric-phase intraocular lenses with multifocality

Abstract: We demonstrate a new type of multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) embedding μm-thin geometric phase (GP) lens layers. As an emerging approach for lens phase design, the GP modulated IOLs outperform conventional diffractive IOLs in multifocality while completely avoiding the clinically undesirable demand for additional surface patterns to standard monofocal IOL designs. The number of foci and light splitting ratio of the GP IOLs are adjusted by changing the number of stacked G… Show more

“…Photo-aligned LC cell, embodying the geometric phase proportional to the local optic axis orientation, are especially well suited for large scale fabrication because the dedicated nanoscale photo-lithography is not necessary; moreover, one can leverage many common technologies in the flat-panel display industry, which are well understood, highly stable and commercially available. Hence, polarization holography, which can generate pure periodic change of linearly-polarized optical field, is a particular powerful photo-alignment method for generating diffractive GP LC waveplate [18][19][20][21].…”

“…At present, LC lenses are finding applications in many dissimilar fields, such as vision (e.g., eyeglasses [16], contact lenses [17], and intraocular lenses [18]), adaptive optics for astronomy [19], or wearable devices [20], in addition to their traditional applications as tunable lenses for consumer photonics [21,22].…”

“…23 However, there is also a percentage of loss of light, which contributes to lower quality of vision, especially in scotopic and mesopic conditions. 24,25 Further studies comparing the outcomes of multifocal IOL implantation in high, moderate, and low myopia are needed to understand its impact on the vision quality.…”
