Geometric morphometrics reveals shifts in flower shape symmetry and size following gene knockdown of CYCLOIDEA and ANTHOCYANIDIN SYNTHASE

Abstract: BackgroundWhile floral symmetry has traditionally been assessed qualitatively, recent advances in geometric morphometrics have opened up new avenues to specifically quantify flower shape and size using robust multivariate statistical methods. In this study, we examine, for the first time, the ability of geometric morphometrics to detect morphological differences in floral dorsoventral asymmetry following virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). Using Fedia graciliflora Fisch. & Meyer (Valerianaceae) as a model, co… Show more

“…In a few recent studies that focused on flowers [58–60] or leaves [61], asymmetry in plants was examined by comparing GM with those in animals [51]. Although we did not study the asymmetry issue, it must be briefly considered.…”

“…We argue that anthesis is the most relevant ontogenetic stage for reproduction as well as pollinator attraction and thus is the most meaningful stage to include in our study. Following other plant studies (Berger et al, 2017;Gómez, Perfectti & Camacho, 2006;Gomez, Perfectti & Klingenberg, 2014;Savriama et al, 2012), we decided to include all floral parts at their own, separate, anthesis. This results in the separate datasets of the TUBE (containing the nectar tube and stamens) and the PETAL (containing the corolla).…”
