Geometric distortion assessment in 3T MR images used for treatment planning in cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy

Abstract: Magnetic Resonance images (MRIs) are employed in brain Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy (SRS/SRT) for target and/or critical organ localization and delineation. However, MRIs are inherently distorted, which also impacts the accuracy of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Computed Tomography (MRI/CT) co-registration process. In this phantom-based study, geometric distortion is assessed in 3T T2-weighted images (T2WIs), while the efficacy of an MRI distortion correction technique is also evaluated. A homoge… Show more

“…As a methodological limitation, there may be image distortion in this experiment. Because the uniformity of the main magnetic field degrades with distance from the isocenter, image distortion appears at the edges of the imageable area [36,37]. The image distortion may have caused each of the left and right eyes to be stretched or contracted on the image.…”

“…For Theocharis et al 2022). PG dosimetry was used to validate the upgraded SRS techniques, to provide data on the constancy and inter-institutional comparability of SRS applications, to establish QA for the upcoming Surface Guided SRS, to implement a planning target volume (PTV)-margin strategy as well as to evaluate MR-only based treatment planning in SRS treatments.…”

“…This is especially true for 3T MRI, which is suitable for evaluating detailed structures of the brain. However, when the MRI is far from the central axis, there is a large amount of distortion that causes spatial misalignment [ 10 ].…”
