Geometric calibration for a dual tube/detector micro‐CT system

Abstract: The authors describe a dual tube/detector micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) system that has the potential to improve temporal resolution and material contrast in small animal imaging studies. To realize this potential, it is necessary to precisely calibrate the geometry of a dual micro-CT system to allow the combination of projection data acquired with each individual tube/detector in a single reconstructed image. The authors present a geometric calibration technique that uses multiple projection images acq… Show more

“…Effects of yshifts are not clearly visible either. Many methods for the estimation of geometrical parameters of cone-beam scanners have been proposed since 1990 [20, [26][27][28][29][30]. These techniques have generally fallen into two categories: those based on iterative nonlinear optimization [26,27] and those based on the direct solution of geometric equations [20,28,29,31].…”

“…In [27][28][29][30], either the design of this calibration object or its positioning, or both, required very high precision. Contrarily, in [20,32] the authors propose methods that avoid strict requirements on the object shape and positioning.…”

“…We have recently introduced a geometric calibration method for the dual tube/detector system, which allows combinations of projections from the two detectors in a single reconstruction for faster dynamic scanning. 17 Due to our dual imaging chains, projection data have to be acquired only over a 90°+ fan angle, rotation. The fan angle for our system is 6.27°.…”

“…This involves a geometric calibration procedure presented in [7] . In essence, the geometric calibration is achieved by scanning a calibration phantom with metallic beads and computing the projections matrices required by the reconstruction.…”
