Geometric and Electronic Structure of α-Oxygen Sites in Mn-ZSM-5 Zeolites

Abstract: It is shown that R-oxygen sites are generated by the decomposition of N 2 O in ion-exchanged Mn-ZSM-5 zeolites. The catalytic activity decreases to zero in 1 h, and the amount of R-oxygen that is formed is reduced from ∼30% R-oxygen sites per Mn atom in the initial N 2 O treatment to a value of ∼4% in the subsequent cycles. The catalytic activity correlates with the intensity of a UV-vis band located at 18 500 cm -1 , suggesting that the R-oxygen sites are linked to Mn sites with a distorted tetragonal symmetr… Show more

“…Recently, the presence of an α-O site in Mn-ZSM-5 was suggested after N 2 O treatment, similar to Fe-ZSM-5. This so called α-O results in the formation of an absorption band in the UV-vis spectra around 18 500 cm −1 , and was suggested to be involved in the N 2 O decomposition in Mn-ZSM-5 141. No reactivity towards hydrocarbons is thus far reported for this species and as is the case for Fe-ZSM-5, the α-O in Mn-ZSM-5 cannot be formed with O 2 .…”

“…Furthermore, with the same experimental setup XES can be measured, which allows one to probe the occupied states within the valence band (12). In situ HERFD XAS or XES experiments have been previously carried out to study the catalytic reaction at the surface of noble metals (11,(13)(14)(15)(16), zeolites (17), and metal organic frameworks (18). Thus far, no such in situ experiments have been performed to directly track the changes of the electronic structure of a solid and its electrochemical activity toward CO 2 .…”
