Geomatics Advanced Testings Flanking Archaeological Research. A Noteworthy Area in the Northern Necropolis of Hierapolis of Frigia (Tk)

Abstract: The paper relates the studies performed on an archaeological context aimed at experimenting aerial and terrestrial methods of rapid mapping survey with those dedicated to archaeological research. Different UAV (Unmanned aerial vehicle) and 360° camera data acquisition and processing strategies are reported and discussed. The integration and fusion approaches have been investigated taking advantages of co-registration approaches. Archaeologists from the University of Pisa have investigated areas of the northern… Show more

“…However, it's crucial to carefully plan each sensor's acquisition strategy. There are three main strategies for capturing 360-degree images for Structure from Motion (SfM) processing: still images, time-lapse, and video (Teppati Losè et al, 2021). For the "Cantina del Principe" survey, the third strategy based on video acquisition was chosen due to its speed and cost-effectiveness.…”

“…Photos from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) were also used to connect different branches of spherical positions and firm the alignment from the outside. Some studies already explored such combinations of datasets, using aerial images as a rigid block to orient spherical data (Teppati Losè, Spanò et al, 2021).…”
