PurposeUsing the campus of a Brazilian university as case study, this research aims to identify which aspects of the outdoor spaces are the most significant in attracting people.Design/methodology/approachThis research relies on the application of different post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methods, including user tracking, behavioural mapping and questionnaires, on one plateau of the campus.FindingsThree group of aspects (socialization, proximity and infrastructure) were identified as key elements in explaining the impact of the campus physical characteristics on users’ behaviour. The results indicate that having characteristics of at least one group of aspects in those spaces can guarantee their vitality and, if there is presence of attributes of more than one group, liveliness can be increased.Research limitations/implicationsFurther studies should be conducted on an entire campus to identify other spatial elements in the three groups.Practical implicationsThis research contributes to the planning of future campuses and to solutions to the existed ones, indicating the most relevant spatial characteristics to be considered. Additionally, the combination of different methods may be useful to future research.Originality/valueMost of the investigations on the university campuses focus on the buildings, and little research has investigated the outdoor spaces, although they play a critical role in learning and academic life, where people establish social, cultural and personal relationships. In addition, studies using several POE allowed a consistent and complete diagnostic about the aspects of the campus, giving recommendations for future projects.

Os modelos digitais de elevação (MDE), são o input inicial para um grande número de modelos e metodologias de análise espacial. Sendo que a qualidade dos resultados extraídos a partir de um MDE, está ligado diretamente a qualidade de sua resolução espacial. Todavia o custo de aquisição de um MDE com uma boa escala espacial é oneroso, fato que pode inviabilizar certos tipos de pesquisa. Neste sentido, boa parte das pesquisas passam a recorrer a opções de MDE gratuitos, mas com resoluções espaciais piores. Mas, existem algumas técnicas estatísticas capazes de promover uma possível melhora na qualidade da resolução espacial nos MDE, como as realizadas no SRTM que fundamentaram a criação do sistema TOPODATA. Desta forma, esse presente artigo empreendeu uma análise estatística da qualidade das informações contidas em MDE de escala mais generalistas, quando interpolados para outras resoluções espaciais superiores. Com o intuito de mensurar os ganhos e perdas reais, discutindo as potencialidades e desafios da aplicação destas técnicas. Assim, esse presente artigo foi dividido em introdução, onde é apresentada a temática e ideia norteadora do artigo. Posteriormente é executada uma breve reflexão teórica sobre MDE e suas diversas variantes, assim como sobre o funcionamento dos métodos de interpolação analisada. No tópico de matérias e métodos, foram descritos todos os procedimentos necessários a execução desta pesquisa, que por fim fundamentaram os resultados e discussões. Por fim são tecidas breves considerações finais frente a temática e agradecimentos.Palavras-chave: Modelos em Geografia Física, Geoestátistica, Geoprocessamento DEM, Geostatistics and interpolators: An analysis of their applicationsA B S T R A C TDigital elevation models (DEM) are the initial input for a large number of spatial analysis models and methodologies. Since the quality of the results extracted from a DEM is directly linked to the quality of its spatial resolution. However, the cost of acquiring a DEM with a good spatial scale is expensive, a fact that can make certain types of research unfeasible. In this sense, a good part of the research turns to free DEM options, but with worse spatial resolutions. However, there are some statistical techniques capable of promoting a possible improvement in the quality of spatial resolution in DEM such as those performed in the SRTM that underpinned the creation of the TOPODATA system. Thus, this article undertook a statistical analysis of the quality of the information contained in more general-scale DEM, when interpolated to other higher spatial resolutions. In order to measure real gains and losses, discussing the potential and challenges of applying these techniques. Thus, this article was divided into an introduction, where the theme and guiding idea of the article is presented. Subsequently, a brief theoretical reflection is carried out on MDE and its various variants, as well as on the functioning of the analyzed interpolation methods. In the topic of materials and methods, all the procedures necessary for the execution of this research were described, which finally substantiated the results and discussions. Finally, brief final remarks on the theme and acknowledgments are made.Keywords: Models in Physical Geography, Geostatistics, Geoprocessing
