Geomatic Contribution for the Restoration Project of the Valentino Castle Green Room. From Data Acquisition to Integrated Documentation

Abstract: Abstract. In the framework of restoration operations, valuable assistance can be supplied from innovative techniques and methods developed in the field of Geomatics. Over the years, this continuous collaboration has produced synergistic and interdisciplinary results that have been successfully contributing to heritage conservation and valorisation. In the case of the current research, thorough multisensory investigations have been performed in order to provide a deeper knowledge of the Green Room of the Valent… Show more

“…These data are recorded in files with great deal of information that cannot be used in BIM digital platforms. For this reason, new strategies related to the interoperability of accurate modelling systems should be developed [22], and especially those related to data management and new sustainable scenarios. This paper includes the implementation of a TeamWork-HBIM methodology that strengthens reciprocal information flows among all the participating areas of specialist technical teams and operators.…”

“…If the number of extracted homologous points is too low -due to the low resolution of the images and to the low contrast between materials characterised by similar thermal emissivity (leading to similar temperatures) -the 3D reconstruction could be heavily affected by outliers if not fail. Considering the extraordinary potentialities of this kind of imagery in the framework of non-destructive investigations of heritage assets (especially if taking into account the precious possibility to enrich the high resolution 3D models with nonvisible multispectral information, following data fusion strategies) (Dlesk et al 2022;Patrucco et al 2020b), it becomes fundamental to underline how the development of new coregistration techniques can provide new effective and powerful tools for the documentation -and therefore for the safeguard -of the cultural heritage. In the particular case of this contribution, the main aim of the presented research is to test -and to evaluate -the effectiveness and the efficiency of two different SfM-based approaches in the framework of thermal images photogrammetric processing.…”

“…The combination of image-and rangebased techniques allows digitization with high metric and radiometric accuracy. This is particularly useful in the field of restoration, where accurate documentation is required for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the surfaces state of conservation (Bevilacqua et al, 2016;Patrucco et al, 2020, Gabellone et al, 2020. These two issues are fundamental, for example, in frescoed spaces.…”
