Geology of the Magura Nappe, south-western Gorce Mountains (Outer Carpathians, Poland)

Abstract: The studied area, located in the south-western part of the Gorce Mountains, is built of flysch deposits representing the Krynica and Bystrica Subunits of the Magura Nappe. Here, in the Late Cretaceous-Early Miocene part of the lithostratigraphic succession of the Krynica Subunit, four formations containing several members were distinguished, whereas in the Bystrica Subunit, only one Middle Eocene-Oligocene formation was identified. The Turbacz and Kudłoń Thrust Sheets in the tectonic structure of the Krynica S… Show more

“…These features seem to cut Gorce Mts. ; this is not confirmed by our other studies (Kania and Szczęch, 2020;Szczęch and Cieszkowski, 2021). Further to the north, these two lineaments are delimiting massifs of the Beskid Wyspowy Mts.…”

“…Our previous study (Kania and Szczęch, 2020), based on the interpretation of the model augmented with field geological mapping (Szczęch and Cieszkowski, 2021), showed how a lineament network can be interpreted in topological and geometrical terms. The aim in the present paper is to up-scale DEM-based geometrical and topological analyses of a regional scale lineament network to find how this is reflected in the tectonic structure of the Western Carpathians.…”

“…Denivelation in the area, measured in a grid 1 × 1 km are between 100 m in the external part of the massif and 400 m in its central part. Morphology is mainly related to the bedrock composed of flysh (sandstones, shales) deposits and geological structure (Szczęch et al, 2016; Szczęch & Cieszkowski, 2021; Szczęch & Waśkowska, 2023). Resources of groundwaters are of good quality and mainly related to the fissured flysh sediments of Magura Beds Basin and sand‐gravel cover (Żaczek & Porowski, 2017).…”
