“…Nonetheless, the general picture that emerges is one of a narrow shallow-marine platform with large volumes of unstable volcanic and glacial debris subject to episodic resedimentation into deeper water, a setting welldocumented from glacially-influenced continental shelf edge and slope environments (e.g. Carlson & Molnia, 1977;Wright & Anderson, 1982;Hampton, 1983;Hill, 1984;Eyles, Eyles & Miall, 1985;Vorren er al., 1988; Fig. 12).…”

“…West of the boundary, the Aleutian Islands rest on the narrow crest of the Aleutian Ridge, a mostly submerged mountain range bordered by deep water to the north and south (Vallier et al ., 1994). The submarine slopes of this ridge have a much greater depth range and more widespread rocky substrate than the seafloor in the eastern section, which is shallow, close to the continent, and blanketed by sediments deposited primarily during glacial periods (Hampton, 1983). The eastern section has some rocky substrates, but these are more patchily distributed than in the western section.…”

“…GLORIA and other data show that the continental slope developing along this active margin is devoid of large submarine canyons, in spite of the presence of large glaciallyformed sea valleys that extend to the edge of the continental shelf (Carlson et al, 1982;Hampton, 1983). Much of the slope is incised only by relatively small canyons and cut by intensive gullying (fig.4).…”
