Geology and geochemistry of granitoid rocks in the Archean Northern complex, Michigan, U.S.A.

Abstract: The Northern complex, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is an Archean greenstone–granite terrane that lies at the southern margin of the Superior Province. The origin of the plutonic suites in the Northern complex can be interpreted within a plate tectonic model proposed for the Superior Province and related to northward-directed subduction and subsequent collision along the Great Lakes tectonic zone. The following plutonic suites are recognized based on intrusive relationships, as well as textural a… Show more

“…They also affect the host of porphyry intrusions. Generally, four types of alteration are found in porphyry Cu-Mo deposits: potassic, phyllitic, argillic and propylitic (Wilkin and Bornhorst, 1992). Field and microscopic observations indicate : (i) sericitization, (ii) epidotization and (iii) propylitic types of hydrothermal alterations.…”

“…The basement of the Baraga Basin surrounding the Eagle intrusion consists of $2.7 Ga Archean igneous rocks (Wilkin and Bornhorst, 1992), which are a part of the late Archean greenstone-granite terrane located north of the Great Lakes tectonic zone (GLTZ) (Fig. 1b).…”

“…There is evidence of intermediate compositions in the area; tonalite and diorite have been mapped in the Southern Complex (Gair and Thaden 1968) and nearby in the Northern Complex (Wilkin & Bornhorst 1992).…”
