Visual computing technologies enable more intuitive data modelling, visualization and analysis, facilitating these processes by real-time interactive visual interfaces. These technologies are essential for software in the oil and gas industry, allowing users to gain insights and actionable information when dealing with increasingly complex, multidisciplinary datasets and processes. In the context of the oil and gas industry, interactive visual computing should also scale well with the growing data size and other components of a data analytics pipeline. We present key problems and challenges motivating the research and development of scalable and interactive visual computing systems, followed by a classification of the most important research themes and related topics. Eleven case studies developed with the industry are also presented, highlighting the main cutting edge findings, limitations and achievements.

AbstractIn this paper, we propose new methods for building geological illustrations and animations. We focus on allowing geologists to create their subsurface models by means of sketches, to quickly communicate concepts and ideas rather than detailed information. The result of our sketch-based modelling approach is a layer-cake volume representing geological phenomena, where each layer is rock material which has accumulated due to a user-defined depositional event. Internal geological structures can be inspected by different visualization techniques that we employ. Faulting and compaction of rock layers are important processes in geology. They can be modelled and visualized with our technique. Our representation supports non-planar faults that a user may define by means of sketches. Real-time illustrative animations are achieved by our GPU accelerated approach.

Throughout history, storytelling has been an effective way of conveying information and knowledge. In the field of visualization, storytelling is rapidly gaining momentum and evolving cutting-edge techniques that enhance understanding. Many communities have commented on the importance of storytelling in data visualization. Storytellers tend to be integrating complex visualizations into their narratives in growing numbers. In this paper, we present a survey of storytelling literature in visualization and present an overview of the common and important elements in storytelling visualization. We also describe the challenges in this field as well as a novel classification of the literature on storytelling in visualization. Our classification scheme highlights the open and unsolved problems in this field as well as the more mature storytelling sub-fields. The benefits offer a concise overview and a starting point into this rapidly evolving research trend and provide a deeper understanding of this topic.
