Geological estimates of undiscovered recoverable oil and gas resources in the United States

Abstract: Undiscovered Recoverable Oil 36-81 Billion Barrels Undiscovered Recoverable Gas l §~ .. 5)~~ Trillion Cu Ft * Marginal Probability Applied * * For regional distribution of inferred reserves. see tables 4 and 15. FIGURE !.-Undiscovered recoverable resources of crude oil and natural gas for the United States. Report~ as a range of values at 95-5 percent probability in billions of barrels for oil and trillions of cubic feet for gas.

“…The Virtue of the integrated approach, for which :volumetric calculations are significant input, is the Variety of techniques utilized in the attempt to gain full understanding of the rock sequence and its contained hydrocarbons. This appi'oach is exemplified by Miller et al (1975), and includes volumetric calculations, subjective probabilities, Delphi estimation. marginal pr0babilities, and Monte Carlo Simulation.…”

“…Estimates of oil and gas resources at various probabilities can be read directly from the curves. These curves incorporate in their distributions the marginal probability (risk) of commercial oil or gas present in any quantity as described in Circular 725 (Miller and others, 1975). Cape Hatteras (Stefansson and others, 1971) suggests the presence of counterclockwise gyres in this vicinity.…”

“…There has, however, been at least one attempt at clarification. United States Geological Survey Circular 725, written by Betty M. Miller, et al (1975) has attempted to gather together many of the estimates of undiscovered recoverable oil and gas in the United States. An attempt has been made to derive agreement of definitions, which will allow a reasonable comparison of the figures that have been published.…”
