Geological development of the Northeast Greenland Shelf

Abstract: Seismic datafrom the East Greenlandshelfshow thatthe northern part ofthe shelf, northof75 8 N, can be subdivided into five, roughly northeast-trending, major tectonic elements. From west to east theyare: the KoldeweyPlatform, the Danmarkshavn Basin, the Danmarkshavn Ridge, the ThetisBasinandthe MarginalHigh. Asixthtectonic element, the Shannon High, hasbeendefined inthe southern part ofthisarea. The offshoreareas between72 8 30 0 Nand75 8 Naredominated byTertiary plateaubasalts, which obscurethe acoustic signals fr… Show more

“…2). On the NE Greenland margin, the succession is interpreted to be present offshore on the Store Koldewey Platform and in the Danmarkshavn Basin based on seismic data (Hamann et al 2005), and possible Permian -Triassic strata in the Thetis Basin are speculatively suggested by Dinkelman et al (2010) and Jackson et al (2012) (Figs 2 & 12a). Rocks of Late Triassic age have been sampled on the East Greenland Ridge (Nielsen et al 2014) (Fig.…”

Cenozoic compressional domes have been described on the Vøring, Faroe -Shetland and Hatton margins, in the Rockall Basin (for a short summary see Kimbell et al 2016), and in the NE Greenland margin (Price & Whitham 1997;Hamann et al 2005). Few distinct phases of compressional dome formation along the west European margin are identified for post-break-up times in the NE Atlantic: Early and Mid-Eocene, Mid-EoceneOligocene and Mid-Miocene (e.g.…”
