Samples of coal from the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, between Jaworzno and Libiąż, were collected from test boreholes and underground excavations in the Janina Coal Mine, southwest Poland. The No. 111-119 hard coal seams are in the upper part of the Cracow Sandstone Series (the Libiąż Beds, Westphalian D). Macroscopically, iron sulfides (pyrite and marcasite) found in hard coal seams are usually in vein and impregnation forms. On the basis of microscopic observations, the following forms of iron sulfides occurrence in the studied coal were observed: framboidal pyrite, euhedral crystals, skeletal and massive vein forms, or pocket-like (impregnation) forms. On the basis of SEM-EDS analysis and X-ray diffraction it can be stated that the iron sulfides observed in coal are a mixture of pyrite and marcasite. WDS analysis in the micro area revealed the chemical composition of sulfides. The iron sulfides contain admixtures of Pb, Hg, Zn, Cu, Au, Ag, Sb, Co, and Ni. There was no As and Cd found in the examined minerals. It has been shown that the tested iron sulfides do not include significant admixtures. There is only a slight enrichment in lead in the vein forms of sulfides. In addition to the iron sulfides, individual inclusions of galena and sphalerite within the pyrite and marcasite have been observed. When it comes to iron sulfides in the vicinity of the crystallized galena, no lead (Pb) in the pyrites can be observed.

Tellurium Enrichment in Jurassic Coal, Brora, Scotland

Mid-Jurassic pyritic coals exposed at the village of Brora, northern Scotland, UK, contain a marked enrichment of tellurium (Te) relative to crustal mean, average world coal compositions and British Isles Carboniferous coals. The Te content of Brora coal pyrite is more than one order of magnitude higher than in sampled pyrite of Carboniferous coals. The Te enrichment coincides with selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) enrichment in the rims of pyrite, and Se/Te is much lower than in pyrites of Carboniferous coals. Initial pyrite formation is attributed to early burial (syn-diagenesis), with incorporation of Te, Se, Hg and lead (Pb) during later pyrite formation. The source of Te may have been a local hydrothermal system which was responsible for alluvial gold (Au) in the region, with some Au in Brora headwaters occurring as tellurides. Anomalous Te is not ubiquitous in coal, but may occur locally, and is detectable by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).

This study is related to seven Jurassic bituminous coal samples collected from four mines of the Huanglong coalfield, southwestern Ordos Basin, China. Petrological and geochemical characteristics of these samples were investigated. The results show that these Jurassic coals are high in inertinite (54 vol. %), followed by vitrinite (31.7 vol.%) and liptinite (3.7 vol.%). The mineralogy of the coals is dominated by illite, kaolinite, quartz, calcite, pyrite, and less siderite, feldspar, goyazite, anatase, illite-smectite, dolomite, and marcasite. These coals are low in sulfur (0.18-0.71%). With the exception of the No. 4 coal from the Dafosi mine, in which the total sulfur is 1.32% and the pyritic sulfur is up to 0.78%. Compared to common Chinese coals, the Jurassic coals are much high in CaO (2.12%), MgO (0.26%), P 2 O 5 (0.21%), Sr (591 µg/g), Ba (476 µg/g), and F (187 µg/g). The excess P, Sr, and Ba in the BMF-2 and BMF-4 are mainly present in goyazite-gorceixite series minerals (goyazite). The content of rare earth elements ranges from 32.2 to 154 µg/g (mean 80.6 µg/g). The chondritenormalized distribution pattern is typically characterized by the enrichment of LREE over HREE. And the high anomaly Eu value (0.86) of these Jurassic coals was probably inherited from its source detrital rocks.
