Geological and geotechnical models definition for 3rd level seismic microzonation studies in Central Italy

Abstract: The 2016-2017 seismic events that struck central Italy led the Government to carry out a project to produce the third level Seismic Microzonation studies in 138 municipalities. These activities have involved many experts in different disciplines such as geology, geomorphology, geophysics, seismology and geotechnical engineering. This project represented the first opportunity to perform nationally coordinated third level Seismic Microzonation studies over a wide area in a quite short time (6 months). It provide… Show more

“…The estimation of ground motion amplification due to site effects plays a fundamental role in the efforts devoted to seismic-risk mitigation (Amanti et al 2020). Thanks to ground motion recordings and earthquake damage reports from sites characterized by topography, it has long been known that topographic features are an indicator of site effects, but theoretical explanations based on the relief's geometrical characteristics usually underestimated the observed amplification values (Geli et al 1988).…”

“…SM3 analysis requires as basic information layer the definition of the local engineering-geological model, which summarizes the site-specific information on the distribution of the engineering-geological units (thereinafter gt-units) distinguished in the subsurface on the basis of their geological, geotechnical and geophysical properties. Starting from a brief description of the geological-geomorphological setting of Central Italy, the paper by Amanti et al (2020a) provides the methodological framework by which the engineering-geological model is retrieved from standard geological information. The authors provided an archive of gt-units in Central Italy and developed a statistical analysis of the shear wave velocity (Vs) distribution among the identified gt-units.…”

“…For these reasons, this study's objective was twofold: to characterize the hydrody- The geological features of these water bodies have already been investigated in many detailed studies either from a stratigraphic and sedimentological [24,25] or paleoenvironmental point of view and as on-shore and off-shore natural gas reservoirs [26,27]. Nevertheless, the hydrogeological features of these local aquifers are unclear.…”
