“…The results reveal a minimum at a density of 2.8 for both NPI and SPI (Figure S1 in the supporting information). This density minimum is consistent with the relative abundance of hornblende‐biotite granite and metapelitic rock in the area [ Herve et al , ; Motoki et al , ], with a density of 2.8. We adopted this bedrock density for the entire domain.…”

“…Zone LCHG4 (3-0 cm): Dominated by Nothofagus dombeyi-type which decreases from 85 to 75% from the bottom to the top of the zone, accompanied by Misodendrum, Ribes, Apiaceae (Osmorhiza type), Ranunculaceae, Empetrum, Rosaceae and Poaceae which show a slight increase but still remain below 5%. Rumex is continuously present showing (Naranjo and Stern 1998;Stern, 2008), Lautaro volcano (Motoki et al, 2006) and Aguilera volcano (Stern, 2008). Black squares correspond to tephra layers reported previously as GT1, GT2 and GT3 at Laguna Gemelas Este (Fig.…”

“…Additionally, the six years of sedimentation between the two 137 Cs peaks include one graded event layer (10.0-12.7 cm). The inferred higher sedimentation rate between 1959/60 and 1965 may be related to (a) a highmagnitude earthquake recorded in Chile in 1960 (Chapron et al, 2006) or (b) the eruption of Volcano Lautaro in 1959/60 (Motoki et al, 2006). The former event might be reflected in a sub-aqueous slump deposit immediately above the tephra layer.…”

“…Thus, they are not identified as pure glass. According to literature data (Motoki et al, 2006;Stern, 2008) the youngest eruption recorded in the area, the eruption of Volcano Lautaro in 1959/60, provided a dacitic tephra. Although the tephra found in the Lago del Desierto sediment sequence was more rhyolitic, the tephra depth, the lack of other tephra in the upper part of the core, the consistence with radionuclide dates and the available historic eruption information, strongly indicate that the analysed tephra is attributable to the last mentioned eruption of Volcano Lautaro.…”
