Geologic Hazards And Constraints Of Offshore Northern And Central California

Abstract: Existing and potential geologic hazards and constraints were indentified by interpretation of high-re-solution seismic profiles from five offshore areas in northern and central California. For purposes of this study, geologic hazards are defined as any natural geologic features or processes, existing or penitential, that would inhibit the development of petroleum resources. Geologic hazards identified are (1) areas of high incidence of seismic activity; (2) active faults; (3) mass movement; (4) steep slopes (&… Show more

“…Landslides have been reported all around the globe along continental slopes removed from submarine canyon-fan systems. Included are slopes off southern California (Buffington & Moore, 1962;Haner & Gorsline, 1978;Field & Clarke, 1979;Nardin et al, 1979a,b;Ploessel et al, 1979;Field & Edwards, 1980;Field & Richmond, 1980;Hein & Gorsline, 1981;Thornton, 1986), central and northern California Richmond and Burdick, 1981), Alaska (Marlow et al, 1970;Hampton & Bouma, 1977;Carlson et al, 1980), Gulf of Mexico (Lehner, 1969;Woodbury, 1977;Booth & Garrison, 1978;Booth, 1979), and Atlantic coast (Embley & Jacobi, 1977;McGregor, 1977;Knebel & Carson, 1979;McGregor et al, 1979;Malahoff et al, 1980;Cashman & Popenoe, 1985;O'Leary, 1986).…”

“…Both of these effects are common throughout the study area, particularly in the slide zone ( fig. 3; Field and others, 1980;Richmond and Burdick, 1981). Hundreds of pockmarks (craters formed by seeping gas) have been mapped along two sidescan-sonar images that were collected parallel to the slope through the slide zone (pockmarks are shown .. in fig.…”
