“…The middle‐late Miocene is also a period of rapid exhumation across south Mexico and the Guatemala‐Honduras [ Ratschbacher et al , 2009]. Middle‐late Miocene compressive deformation has been observed in the Peten Basin, Campeche, the Veracruz Basin, the Tabasco area and the Mexican Ridge [ Jennette et al , 2003; Ambrose et al , 2003; Mitra et al , 2005; Le Roy et al , 2008; Rangin et al , 2008; Alzaga‐Ruiz et al , 2009; Witt et al , 2012]. Although deformation mechanisms observed in these areas may differ, the middle‐late Miocene appears as one of the most prominent periods of deformation across southern Mexico.…”

“…The internal subsurface configuration of the province is characterized by very deep and fragmented basement affected by different tectonic deformational events. At depth the Sureste province is divided into four subprovinces: Salina del Istmo, Comalcalco, Reforma-Akal and Macuspana [40,44,45]. The basement of the province consists of crystalline rocks of Precambrian and Paleozoic age [30,49] most of which are covered by Mesozoic rock units composed of red beds, marine evaporites and carbonates of basin and platform marine facies [53].…”

“…This horst is bordered by regional-scale listric normal faults, to the West by the Comalcalco Fault and to the East by the Frontera Fault. Ambrose et al (2003) argued that the major deep-seated normal faults in the Macuspana basin are primary fluid migration pathways to the Tertiary traps. In the Reforma-Akal horst, Mesozoic carbonate rocks (Upper Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous) contain most of the oil fields; only few are located in the Cenozoic siliciclastic sedimentary column.…”
