“…The compilation of Magoon and others (1976) remains a seminal work on the geology of Cook Inlet, and they had access to some unpublished industry data. Some structures have been illustrated by Fisher and Magoon (1978), Winkler (1992), Haeussler and others (2000), Bruhn and Haeussler (2006), and others (2008, 2010), however, other structures are poorly documented. For example, a few of the structures on the map by Magoon and others (1976) apparently were defined by linear trends of dry and abandoned wildcat wells.…”

“…Only previously published lines are labeled with their number. The data source of the profile is listed in front of the line number as follows: FM, Fisher and Magoon (1978); HBP, ARCO data published in Haeussler, Bruhn, and Pratt (2000); BH, ARCO data published in Bruhn and Haeussler (2006); NP, not published ARCO data; WG, Western Geophysical data in others (2008, 2010). M o u n t a i n s A l a s k a R a n g e A l e u t i a n R a n g e margin, and rocks of much of the Alaska Range are either arc-derived volcanic or plutonic rocks (Magoon and others, 1976;Plafker and others, 1994).…”

“…Discontinuous exposures of Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks are present along the east and west sides of the basin; the upper part of the Tertiary section (late Miocene and early Pliocene) is exposed in low bluff exposures that rim the Kenai Lowland. A subsurface dataset that includes two-dimensional (2-D) seismic and a limited number of exploration wells penetrating Mesozoic rocks demonstrate the Mesozoic section extends continuously under the basin from northwest to southeast (Fisher and Magoon, 1978;figure 3). The basin includes a composite thickness of dominantly marine Mesozoic strata totaling more than 35,000 feet (~10,670 m) thick (figure 4; Detterman and Hartsock, 1966;Kirschner and Lyon, 1973).…”

“…The Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet coal province is centered on the deep trough in the arc-trench gap between the Aleutian volcanic arc and the Aleutian Trench (Fisher and Magoon, 1978). The Cook Inlet Basin, which includes the onshore coalfields and offshore Cook Inlet, lies in the northwesternmost part of this arc-trench gap.…”
