The junction of the Dinaric and Hellenic mountain belts hosts a trans-orogenic normal fault system (Shkoder-Peja Normal Fault, SPNF) that has accommodated oroclinal bending, as well as focused basin formation and drainage of the Drin River catchment. Analysis of fluvial morphology of this catchment reveals higher values of river slope indices (ksn) and χ (Chi) between the normal faults of the SPNF and the Drin drainage divide. The drainage divide is predicted to be migrating away from the SPNF, except at the NE end of the SPNF system. Two basins analysed in the hangingwall of the SPNF, the Western Kosovo Basin (WKB) and Tropoja Basin (TB), contain late Pliocene-to-Holocene sedimentary rocks deposited well after the main fault activity and immediately after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). These layers document an early Pleistocene transition from lacustrine to fluvial conditions that reflects a sudden change from internal to external drainage of paleo-lakes. In the TB, these layers were incised to form three generations of river terraces, interpreted to reflect episodic downstream incision during re-organisation of the paleo-Drin River drainage system. 36Cl-cosmogenic-nuclide depth-profile ages of the two youngest terraces (∼12, ∼8 ka) correlate with periods of wetter climate and increased sediment transport in post-LGM time. The incision rate (∼12 mm/yr) is significantly greater than reported in central and southern Albania. Thus, glacial/interglacial climatic variability, hinterland erosion and base-level changes appear to have regulated basin filling and excavation cycles when the rivers draining the WKB and TB became part of the river network emptying into the Adriatic Sea. These dramatic morphological changes occurred long after normal faulting and clockwise rotation on the SPNF initiated in late Oligocene-Miocene time. Faulting provided a structural and erosional template upon which climate-induced erosion in Holocene time effected reorganisation of the regional drainage pattern, including the formation and partial demise of lakes and basins. The arc of the main drainage divide around the SPNF deviates from the general coincidence of this divide with the NW-SE trend of the Dinaric-Hellenic mountain chain. This arc encompasses the morphological imprint left by roll-back subduction of the Adriatic slab beneath the northwestern Hellenides.

Global geological hazards have brought huge losses, and the fast development in China is no exception. At present, China's hazard prevention and mitigation research and construction is mostly concentrated in the cities, while the rural, mountainous regions suffering the most serious damage and loss from geological hazards are neglected. In these areas, hazard prevention planning is missing or uses the city standard, lacking scientific analysis and theoretical support. Therefore, the study of disaster prevention and mitigation in remote regions is becoming more urgent. Existing studies on geological hazard prevention mainly focus on urban areas but ignore remote and rural areas where large numbers of people live. By drawing experience from disaster prevention and reduction in urban areas and incorporating effective scientific methods, this study aims to establish a planning support system for disaster mitigation to reduce the impact of disasters in rural areas on people and their property. The most significant contributions this research and practice offers is as follows. Firstly, the high-precision data of the villages, which is usually lacking and difficult to acquire, can easily and quickly be obtained by unmanned aerial vehicles (UVA) equipped with optical sensors and laser scanners. Secondly, combining high-precision data and the disaster evaluation model, geological disaster risk assessment technology has been developed for rural areas that addresses not only the natural factors but also human activities. Thirdly, based on disaster risk assessment technology, disaster prevention planning that has been constructed specifically for villages is more quantitative than before. Fourthly, with the application of a planning support system in disaster mitigation, a scientific and effective solution for disaster rescue can be achieved automatically. Lastly, this study selects a suitable area for implementation and demonstration, which can verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the system and enrich the knowledge base through a demonstration case. Based on the above research, a scientific hazard prevention strategy is put forward, which provides a scientific basis for decision-making and a support method for disaster prevention planning in villages.

(2016) Testing cost-effective methodologies for flood and seismic vulnerability assessment in communities of developing countries (Dajç, northern Albania), Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk, 7:3, 971-999, DOI: 10.1080/19475705.2015 Nowadays many developing countries need effective measures to reduce the disaster related risks. Structural interventions are the most effective to achieve these aims. Nevertheless, in the absence of adequate financial resources different low-cost strategies can be used to minimize losses. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the disaster risk reduction can be gathered building a community coping capacity. In the case study, flood and seismic analyses have been carried out using relatively simple and low-cost technologies, fundamental for governments and research institutions of poorly developed countries. In fact, through the acquisition and dissemination of these basic information, a reduction of vulnerability and risk can be achieved. In detail, two methodologies for the evaluation of hydraulic and seismic vulnerability were tested in the Dajç municipality (Northern Albania), a high-seismicity region that is also severely affected by floods. Updated bathymetric, topographic and hydraulic data were processed with HEC-RAS software to identify sites potentially affected by dykes overflowing. Besides, the soil-structure interaction effects for three strategic buildings were studied using microtremors and the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio method. This flood and seismic vulnerability analysis was then evaluated in terms of costs and ease of accessibility in order to suggest the best use both of the employed devices and the obtained information for designing good civil protection plans and to inform the population about the right behaviour in case of threat.
