“…Moreover, EEEV has been reported to cause mortality or neurological impairment in deer populations in Georgia and Michigan, and the virus has been isolated from the brain tissue of these mammals [60, 61]. Fatalities caused by EEEV infection in white-tailed deer have also been reported from New York, where infections of a deer and a horse occurred within two weeks of one another in the same town [9]. Nonetheless, the exposure of deer to EEEV does not indicate whether these animals maintain viremia sufficient to infect mosquitoes.…”

“…EEEV activity has been historically episodic; however, more recently the frequency of virus activity has changed, and human and equine disease incidence has increased in the northeastern United States (e.g. in Connecticut, Maine and Vermont) [39].

“…Cases of EEE in humans in New York State were obtained from published literature. For the study period 1971-2012, published articles with human cases covered the years: 1966-1977 [25], 1971 [11], 1970-1992 [13], 1971-2012 [1, 15], 1972-1974 [26], 1976 [27], 1978-1985 [9], 1990-1991 [28] and 1992-2012 [1,15]. Data included dates of onset of cases in humans [1,9,15].…”

“…Occurrences of human cases [1,9,11,13,15] along with the presence of mosquito species having the virus [8,13,14,16] have had a notable intermittency. Various mosquito species have been suggested as the transmitters of the virus to humans, or causative vectors [8,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…Interestingly, the year the 6 puppies from New York were diagnosed with EEE (2011) also saw the highest number of equine cases of EEE in 20 y in New York State, 11 of 12 of which originated in the same or adjacent county to the puppies with EEE. 9 This highlights the typical geographic and temporal nature of EEE epizootics and epidemics. 1,9 EEE is known to occur in swampy areas given their proximity to mosquito vectors.…”
