Geographies of tourism development and planning

Abstract: Development and planning have long been a focus of tourism geographers. Although the ideas of development and planning are complex and challenging to define and study, there is a strong agreement on the academic and societal relevance of their research in tourism geographies: tourism is a growth industry which requires holistic and future-oriented planning measures that minimize the negative externalities of tourism and guide the industry's growth towards a development path. A brief overview of early phases an… Show more

“…The subject of tourism' spatial distribution and its territorial dynamics has been largely approached in the scientific literature (Saarinen et al, 2017;Sarrion-Gavilan et al, 2015;Yang & Wong, 2013;Luo & Yang, 2013). It gained a certain appeal for policy-makers, given the fact that the level of concentration/dispersion of tourism activities is directly related to the impact those activities have or may have on the territory (Cornelissen, 2005).…”

“…This relationship owns its origins to the fact that in many contexts, tourism is perceived and approached as an economic solution when other resources are missing or when main economic activities tend to decline in importance (Boujrouf et al, 1998;Ibănescu, 2015). The spatial dimension is of central importance in tourismrelated policies since the nature and potentialities of a territory influence the evolution of tourism activities within and represent essential factors in establishing development priorities (Iatu & Bulai, 2011;Saarinen et al, 2017).…”

“…Other research has highlighted the economic risks of single market focus strategies, also due to tourism research gaps in understanding such markets [21]. Proper tourism planning is essential [22], avoiding inappropriate and unresearched strategies [23,24], while using proven methods that have been transformed due to SNSs and big data use for research. Hall [25] pointedly remarks, 'Theory-based interventions, facilities and understanding of what works across different behaviours, contexts, geographical regions and populations' are essential'.…”

“…Adamo (2019) stresses the significance of planning in the context of peripheral tourism spaces. The nexus of tourism and placebased development thinking in the global South and of the role of local governments is only beginning to be explored across international tourism scholarship with most work undertaken by geographers (Adu-Ampong, 2016;Saarinen et al, 2017;Rogerson, 2019b).…”
