Geographical visualization: A participatory planning support tool for imagining landscape futures

Abstract: The geographical visualization of urban and regional landscapes is a powerful technique for engaging actors involved in decision-making processes. Tools developed can empower professional and citizen alike to make better-informed decisions. The paper reports on collaborative research being undertaken to develop and apply a range of 3D geographical visualization products to enhance both planning and scientific communication processes. In this paper we discuss some developments and applications of 3D geographica… Show more

“…Visualisations have to be able to interpret some issues exactly (Drettakis et al 2007), while merely sketching others (Lange 2005). In some cases, a small to modest amount of detail is sufficient for obtaining the level of realism needed (Pettit et al 2006). If the information is too complex, contains too many parameters, or is too abstract, it will be difficult to grasp (San José et al 2011;Stahre Wästberg et al 2013;Wissen Hayek 2011).…”

“…Landscape visualisation can also assist internal users in sharing and refining information and models. Adapted from Pettit et al, 2006. tant role as a communication and engagement medium within the broader context of participatory decision making (Wu et al, 2010;Drummond and French, 2008;Lange and Hehl-Lange, 2005;Harris, 1989).…”

“…Bishop and Lange, 2005;Cartwright et al, 2004;Lovett, 2005;Pettit et al, 2006). However, there remain many challenges in applying landscape visualisation techniques for effectively communicating processes and changes in both natural and built landscapes.…”

“…In addition to the look of precinct objects, the manner in which they are placed in a precinct site was a primary focus of the semi-structured interviews. Some options that were discussed were a drag-and-drop approach as developed by Pettit et al (2006) and the drawing and extruding of building footprints. These approaches can also be tedious in circumstances where rapid precinct scenarios need to be modelled or when a precinct may consist of hundreds of objects.…”
