Increasing human settlement and disturbance adjacent to protected areas have intensified competition between people and wildlife for resources and living space. In northern Cameroon, over 60,000 people live in villages surrounding Bénoué National Park. In that same area, as in other parts of Africa, savanna elephants damage crops, homes, water provision infrastructures, and grain stores. Using almost 1000 satellite-derived positions for two matriarch female elephants from 2007 to 2009, movement patterns were analyzed with respect to a highway, secondary roads, unpaved park roads, rivers, and villages through the use of log linear modeling. More than half of all locations and core areas occurred outside the park, while seasonal and individual differences in home range size and distribution were found within the protected area. Elephant occurrence within approximately 7 to 9 km of villages showed a decreasing trend with proximity. The highway appeared to act as a barrier to movement for one elephant herd, while the other did not come within 11 km of it. On the other hand, elephants remained close to the Bénoué River and secondary roads. Our findings show that in the Bénoué Wildlife Conservation Area, perennial water availability and human disturbance from the presence of villages can influence elephant spatial distribution in the protected area, and overlap of villages with elephant home range indicates a high potential for human-elephant conflict. This highlights the need for more effective land use planning to reduce such conflict and for additional research into movement patterns of the Bénoué National Park elephant population.

Local production supports the economies of place and increasingly makes sense as the citizen-consumers increase in number and awareness. Nonetheless, despite the value of the short supply chains, some researchers have reacted sceptically to the irrational optimism around this sales structure. A close relationship with consumers does not imply more profit or exchange fairness by definition. In fact, increasing marketing costs must be considered and there is still information asymmetry, and the profiteering farmers could take advantage of the consumer trust. Through data reduction we explored the farmers' motivation and perceived effects of participating in short food supply chains. We also analysed the location of farms along with their size, production, sale channels and the relative market share, as well as whether they adopted quality certifications. We found that the farmers that work within the short food supply chains opt for a sort of co-certification mechanism based on the consumer/producer relationships rather than opting for the quality certification. Furthermore, the multivariate analysis showed different motivations and perceptions of direct sales among farmers: those that were the largest and farthest from the point of sale, were positive toward the social values of short food supply chains, while the rest seemed less competitive and were more motivated by profit and survival. The results reaffirm that the local production may not be good per se, and the presence of profit and surviving-orientation to market should be considered a treat especially for the reputation of the whole system.

How Have Environmental Concepts Reshaped the Agroforestry Concept?

Environmental sciences and concepts have evolved a great deal in the last three decades. This study aims to account for the way environmental concepts have changed and to describe the conse- quences for the concept of agroforestry. The study is based on a bibliometric ana- lysis carried out on the Web of Science, and summarizes the literature collected on the subject. Examples are given to support the analysis: agroforestry-based coffee-growing in the Western Ghats in India, cocoa in Ivory Coast and jungle rubber in Indonesia. Agroforestry evol- ved considerably with the emergence of the biodiversity and ecosystem concepts, and conservation science now also covers ecosystems that have been modi- fied by humans. The development of agroforestry can be compared with that of agroecology: a study on the Web of Science shows a similar pattern in the last two decades. Although the recognition of agroecology as a science has introduced new ways of managing agroforestry sys- tems, the way agroforestry has deve- loped and its broad scope of application may have disconnected it somewhat from reality on the ground and from the far- mers who actually practice it. Precautions are therefore needed in designing and managing these systems: farmers’ expec- tations, in contexts that are determined at once by social, economic and political factors, must not be ignored, and agrofo- restry systems should not be exclusively geared to productivity. Agroforestry can- not evolve as an environmental concept if it is voided of its most fundamental goal, which is to bring sustainable improve- ments to farming livelihoods.
