Geographical Distribution of the Space-Weaving Spider,Chibchea salta, from Northwestern Argentina: New Records and Bioclimatic Modeling

Abstract: New records of the spider Chibchea salta Huber 2000 (Araneae, Pholcidae) from northwestern Argentina are provided, and the potential range of this species is modeled. Two presence-only methods, Maxent and Bioclim, were run using 19 bioclimatic parameters at a resolution of 30 arc seconds. The climatic profile of C. salta is described, and the relative importance of the bioclimatic variables is explored. Temperature variables proved to be more decisive to the final range shape. The range predicted with Maxent i… Show more

“…Since suitability in MAXENT prediction maps is expressed in a continuous range (from 0 to 1 in the logistic output, here used), a threshold rule was used to define a limit between suitable and not suitable cells. In this study, the "maximum training sensitivity plus specificity" threshold was applied (LIU et al 2005, RUBIO & ACOSTA 2011. Most settings were left in their default (recommended) values, but maximal number of background points was set to 25000, and maximum iterations to 3500.…”

“…Maximizing the sum of sensitivity and specificity approach which satisfies the 3 main threshold selection criteria (objectivity, equality and discriminability) has been recommended for models that use presence-only data and background or pseudo-absence data (i.e., MaxEnt) [ 85 , 86 ]. This threshold has been previously used in several modeling studies to discriminate the suitable areas of invasive species [ 49 , 87 ]. The relative importance of predictor variables to the individual IAPS models was analyzed using variable contribution table and jackknife test [ 50 , 51 , 88 ].…”

“…C. salta has been recorded in different localities of the Yungas forests in Salta province (Huber 2000) and Calilegua National Park, Jujuy province (Huber in press). Rubio and Acosta (2011) Nerudia Huber, 2000 Composition and distribution. Nerudia is a monospecific genus (World Spider Catalog 2014), and is only known from Huasco, Atacama, Chile.…”
