Geographical distribution ofAngiostrongylus vasorumin foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in the Republic of Ireland

Abstract: The reported incidence of the metastrongylid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum, that infects dogs and other canids, is increasing worldwide outside recognized endemic foci. This apparent expansion of the parasite's range is causing concern to veterinary clinicians as the disease caused in dogs can be life threatening and its treatment is not straightforward. The red fox is thought to be a reservoir host for dogs. To investigate the spatial distribution of infection in foxes in Ireland, the hearts and lungs of 5… Show more

“…Organs were dissected over 3–12 months, and were defrosted overnight at 5 °C and inspected within 8 hours. Hearts and lungs were processed and examined by a modified flush and dissection technique ( Mccarthy et al, 2018 ; Morgan et al, 2008 ). The heart was removed from the pericardial tissue and a small incision was made in the right ventricle.…”

“…The overall prevalence of 7.3% has been reported in the UK fox population varying widely between regions, from 0% in Scotland and northern England to 23% in south-east England (Morgan et al, 2008). In the Republic of Ireland the incidence of infection was found to be 39.9% with positive samples occurring in each of the country's 26 counties (McCarthy et al, 2016). In Denmark, recognized as an endemic area, A. vasorum was recorded in 48.6% of foxes (Saeed et al, 2006).…”
