Geographical distribution and epidemiological features of Old WorldLeishmania infantumandLeishmania donovanifoci, based on the isoenzyme analysis of 2277 strains

Abstract: A series of 2277 Leishmania strains from Old World visceral leishmaniasis foci, isolated between 1973 and 2008, were studied by isoenzyme analysis. The strains were obtained from humans, domestic and wild carnivores, rodents and phlebotomine sandflies, and came from 36 countries. In all, 60 different zymodemes were identified and clustered by a phenetic analysis into 3 different groups corresponding to the typically visceralizing species L. donovani (20 zymodemes, 169 strains), L. archibaldi (3 zymodemes, 46 s… Show more

“…Out of these, IMT 401 (MCAN/PT/13/IMT401) was sent to the Centre National de Référence des Leishmanioses (Montpellier, France) and typed by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE) [14] as L. infantum MON-1, the most common zymodeme in both humans and dogs in the Mediterranean basin [15]. The low sensitivity of cultural parasitological techniques has also been described by other authors [16, 17].…”

“…The combined pattern of all these proteins constitutes a so-called zymodeme, which serves as the basis for species assignment as well as for classification below the species level (30,55,58,(86)(87)(88). Nevertheless, different labs make use of other enzymes, leading to several identification systems, such as the MON (Montpellier, France) (26), LON (London, United Kingdom) (89), and IOC (Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) (90) classifications.…”
