Geographic distribution of physicians in Portugal

Abstract: The main goals of this paper are to (1) analyse the inequality in geographic distribution of physicians and its evolution, (2) estimate the determinants of physician density, and (3) assess the importance of competitive and agglomerative forces in location decisions. The analysis of the geographic distribution of physicians is based on the ratio of general practitioners (GPs) and specialists to 1,000 inhabitants. The inequality is measured using Gini indices, coefficients of variation, and physician-to-populat… Show more

“…Geographic dispersion of ASD resources and information: In many underdeveloped countries, the more urbanized communities tend to have greater access to and utilization of health and welfare resources (World Bank, 1997;Jutting, 2002;Isabel and Paula, 2009). Egypt appears to be of no exception, as the clustered sampling results in this study show, albeit to a lesser extent since few households are inclined to avail of institutional sources of care for their autistic members.…”

“…They find that communities of all sizes gained physicians over this period, but growth rates were larger for smaller communities. A recent paper by Isabel and Paula [9] examines some of these issues using data for Portugal from 1996 and 2007. Over this period, the total number of physicians in Portugal grew by approximately 30% and the number per capita grew by approximately 22%.…”

“…9 Particularly for the last two periods, there is correlation in population measures, as certain hubs of economic activity are formed. This shows that similar markets are likely to cluster together and further suggests that unobserved characteristics are also likely to be correlated across space.…”

“…According to Isabel and Paula (2010), the geographical dispersion of physicians arises from an imbalanced distribution of income geography (33). In Japan, regional attractiveness for GPs has been determined by factors including the ratio of total employees recruited in an industry to the number of residents in a region, the price of commercial land in the area, and the number of the whole population per day in the region (34).…”
