In order to understand the underlaying causes of new severe turcicum leaf blight outbreaks in East Africa, a survey was undertaken in Uganda to examine the sorghum-Setosphaeria turcica interaction in terms of disease severity and incidence, the overall fungal population structure, and new resistant resources. Highest disease severities were recorded on caudatum accessions, whereas kafir genotypes were most resistant. The disease was more severe in the most humid farmlands compared to moderately dry agro-ecologies. In districts with wide adoption of the Epuripur variety a very high incidence (100%) of turcicum leaf blight was found. The two S. turcica mating type genes MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 assessed on fungal isolates deriving from both sorghum and maize diseased leaves were found in 20 of 23 districts sampled and in equal proportions. Upon cross inoculation on maize differential lines, four S. turcica isolates were identified as race 1, two as race 2, and one isolate corresponded to race 0 and race 3, respectively. The remaining 10 S. turcica isolates did not cause any disease symptoms on the maize lines assessed. Highly resistant accessions originating from a regional collection were found among the five sorghum races (kafir, guinea, caudatum, bicolor and durra), and are now implemented in new sorghum disease resistance programs.

Aim The aims of this study were to identify races and mating types of Setosphaeria turcica causing northern corn leaf blight in Heilongjiang province of China and analyse the genetic diversity of S. turcica isolates using SSR markers. Methods and Results Based on gene‐for‐gene interactions, 13 races of S. turcica (races 0, 1, 2, 3, 12, 13, 23, 123, N, 1N, 12N, 3N and 23N) were isolated from infected corn plants in Heilongjiang province. Races 0 and 1 were the predominant races, and race 23N was identified for the first time in the region. Using two pairs of specific primers, three mating types, ‘a’, ‘Aa’ and ‘A’, were identified, with ‘a’ being the predominant mating type. SSR markers were used to analyse genetic diversity of 60 S. turcica isolates. Five SSR primers were polymorphic, which resulted in 45 reproducible bands with 2–15 bands for each primer. Cluster analysis separated the isolates into five groups at a similarity coefficient of 0·84. Analysis of molecular variance showed that there was significant correlation between SSR groups and mating type of the isolates. No significant correlation was found between SSR groups and physiological races or geographical location of the isolates. Conclusions The work reported that races 0 and 1 were the predominant races, and race 23N was identified for the first time in Heilongjiang province with ‘a’ being the predominant mating type. There was significant correlation between SSR groups and mating type of S. turcica isolates. Significance and Impact of the Study Our results provide information on population structure and genetic diversity of S. turcica causing Northern corn leaf blight, which will facilitate the development of effective disease management programs.

Development activities and increasing urbanization have direct impact on solid waste generation, especially in municipalities of the developing countries, which poses a major challenge to the authorities. Many various technologies and strategies can be used in the field of garbage procedures. Incineration is a well-organized approach and tool to decrease the volume of waste and insist for additional landfill area. One of the important benefits of using the incineration is its ability to decrease a significant amount of waste combustibles by 80 to 95%. Controlling air pollution in the process of using the incineration poses a challenge for solid waste disposal. The data utilized in this article include personal interview of the experts handling the incineration process in Langkawi and personal observation. Secondary data obtained from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government was used to investigate the external air pollution from using the incinerator in Langkawi. The results showed, through the analysis of raw data with SPSS IBM 19 and Pearson correlation analysis and identify cluster of dendrogram generated by UPGMA, an external pollution minimum (p<0.05) between sampling sites inside the incinerator. The reasons for the difference are related to untimely and inappropriate opening of the combustion chamber door, exorbitance blowing and improper use of the installed air pollution control devices. The proper treatment of solid waste is very crucial, especially in Langkawi Island which is a tourist destination. The use of incinerator can enhance solid waste treatment, but only when the standard operating procedure is observed. Without properly observing the procedure, the use of an incinerator can cause more environmental and personal health issues like air pollution and the releasing of hazardous waste and clinical waste s into the landfill. These are some of the reasons that motivated this study to investigate the use of incineration in Langkawi Island.
