Geographic Distribution and Genetic Analysis of Physiological Racesof Setosphaeria turcica in Northern China

Abstract: Five hundreds and forty-six isolates of Setosphaeria turcica, the causal agent of Northern Corn Leaf Blight, were collected in 61 corn-growing locations throughout six provinces of Northern China during [2000][2001][2002], to determine their pathogenicity on two sets of host differentials: OH43/Huangzao4, OH43Ht1Huangzao4Ht1, OH43Ht2/Huangzao4Ht2, OH43Ht3/Huangzao4Ht3 and OH43HtN/Huangzao4HtN. The isolates were grouped into 13 different physiological races (0, 1, 12, 3, 13, 23, N, 1N, 2N, 12N, 3N, 23N and 123… Show more

“…Our investigation showed that also race 1, 2 and 3 are present and maybe others since unfortunately no seed from other maize differential lines were available at the time of assessment. The presence of multiple races on maize in East Africa has been suggested in other surveys (Weltz 1998;Muiru 2008) and race proliferation is also reported from China (Dong et al 2008). The susceptible responses on the maize genotypes challenged with our set of S. turcica isolates were unexpected, especially as the control lines carrying no Ht resistance remained uninfected.…”

“…Weems and Bradley () found that race 0, 1, 1mn were the most prevalent races in the north central U.S. At present, 16 races have been reported in China, including race 0, 1, 2, 3, N, 1N, 2N, 3N, 12, 13, 23, 12N, 123N, 123, 13N and 23N (Dong et al . ; He et al . ; Jiang and Fan ; Gao et al .…”
