Geographic comparisons of the incidence of dental erosion: a two centre study

Abstract: This study revealed that the premolars in both arches are most commonly afflicted with erosion. The same results were obtained in an earlier study conducted by Sognnaes, Wolcott & Xhonga (1972) and Xhonga, Wolcott & Sognnaes (1972) evaluating the erosion pattern on extracted teeth. These findings should be helpful in further investigation into the aetiology and treatment. Educational, epidemiological and preventive concerns derive from a study establishing the dental erosion frequency on a large population sam… Show more

“…Attrition is a physical phenomenon caused by the contact between teeth and abrasion is a pathological phenomenon caused by the abnormal mechanical action 36) . Clinical aspects of dental erosion is shown by the number of teeth by bilateral, does not represent a rough surface or chalk that is accompanied by decalcification process, lubricant and peripheral surface of the enamel is smooth transition to the normal surface is known that there is no color change 37) . Also, dental erosion is caused by direct contact between tooth surfaces and acid which demineralizes tooth surfaces and without formating lesions below the surface, enamel rods peripheral places get softened.…”

“…The prevalence of erosion and wedge-shaped defects has been examined in several studies [Sognnaes et al, 1972;Xhonga and Valdmanis, 1983;Smith and Knight, 1984;Järvinen et al, 1991;Lussi et al, 1991]. Careful observation and clinical experience led us to hypothesize a progression of these lesions with time despite dietary counselling and oral hygiene instruction.…”

“…Orta şiddetteki lezyonlar nadiren (prevalansı %4) ve eşit dağılımlı olarak görülmüştür. Şiddetli lezyonlar baskın bir şekilde (prevalansı %25) molar ve premolarlarda bulunmuştur 37 . İstanbul'da okul çağındaki 11 yaş grubu 153 çocukta yapılan çalışmada, eroziv lezyonlar incelenmiştir 38 .…”
