Disponível on-line no endereço www.igc.usp.br/geologiausp -25 -Resumo A disposição de resíduos sólidos pode gerar problemas ao ambiente, além do risco potencial de instabilidades geotécnicas mesmo em obras planejadas, como disposições em pilhas elevadas ou pontas de aterro, por representarem meras adaptações em obras de engenharia civil. A cidade de Leme, SP, produz aproximadamente 35 t/dia de resíduos sólidos urbanos, depositados em um aterro localizado no distrito de Barro Preto. Este trabalho é um diagnóstico ambiental de um aterro de resíduos sólidos, a partir da análise hidrogeológica e levantamento geofísico, com indícios de instabilidade geotécnica verificados na área, para análise dos condicionantes que provocam a surgência de chorume nas laterais do aterro e sua relação com movimentos de massa e instalação de ravinas no solo de cobertura, com consequente exposição dos resíduos. Os resultados indicam horizontes de baixa resistividade conectados com pontos de surgência, gerados pela decomposição de matéria orgânica. Tais horizontes resultam da concentração de chorume em alguns locais, que, por sua vez, devem provocar a perda de coesão dos materiais que constituem a pilha. Os resultados são áreas com fluxo de massa por movimentos rotacionais, que, aliado ao fluxo superficial de águas pluviais, evolui para ravinas e exposição de resíduos, preferencialmente nos pontos de surgência. O fluxo de chorume em superfície atinge áreas além dos limites do aterro, com impacto direto na agricultura local e risco aos transeuntes que utilizam a rodovia margeada pelo aterro.Palavras-chave: Eletrorresistividade; Chorume; Surgência; Movimento de massa; Ravina. AbstractThe disposal of solid waste can create environmental problems, in addition to the potential risk of instability even in planned geotechnical works, such as provisions in stacks or high ends of the landfill, because they represent mere adjustments in civil engineering works. The Leme city, SP, generates about 35 t/day of municipal waste, that are deposited in a landfill located in the Barro Preto neighborhood. This work conducted a geophysical survey, based on geotechnical instability evidence in area, for analysis of the conditioners that cause on the sides leachate resurgence landfill and its relationship to mass movements and ravines installation in cover soil, with consequent waste exposure. The results indicate horizons of low resistivity connected with resurgence points generated by the organic matter decomposition contained in the waste. Such horizons result in leachate concentration in some places, which, in turn, may lead to loss of cohesion of the materials constituting the residues mass. The results are areas with mass flow by rotational movements, which, together with the surface flow of rainwater, evolves into ravines and exposed residues, preferably at the resurgence point. Selecting a suitable place to install a new landfill is a hard work. Bauru is a Brazilian municipality where the local landfill currently in use has a life span that is almost over, and the selection of a new area for a future landfill is crucial and urgent. Here we use a geographic information system (GIS) approach to indicate possible suitable areas for installing the landfill. The considered criteria were: river network and the respective buffer zone, relief, urban areas and their respective buffer zone, existence of Areas for Environmental Protection (AEPs), occurrence of wells and their respective buffer zones, existence of airports and their buffer zones, wind direction, and the road network and its respective buffer zone. Due the facts that (1) Bauru has an urban area relatively large in relation to whole municipal area, (2) Bauru has two airports, and (3) this area encompasses parts of three AEPs, the model showed that there are few areas suitable and moderately suitable in Bauru, and the greater part of the municipality is unsuitable to install a new landfill. Due to this important finding reported here, the local policymakers should consider the suitable or even moderately suitable areas for analysis in situ or look for other creative solutions for destination of the solid waste. We highly encourage the use of GIS in studies that seek suitable areas for future landfills, having found that SIG was a tool that allowed fast and precise work and generated an outcome sufficiently clear of interpretation.Implications: Solid waste (SW) management is one of the main environmental concerns nowadays. Landfilling SW is still the main practice to disposal of such material. However, for many regions, suitable places for landfilling are getting scarce. This study proved this situation for a populous place in a southeastern Brazilian region. This study also showed how the decision makers should manage the problem in order to minimize the amount of SW generated and delivered for the landfill. Massive investment in education is a critical issue to reach the proposed aim.
