Geoelectric Evaluation of Groundwater Potential and Vulnerability of Overburden Aquifers at Onibu-Eja Active Open Dumpsite, Osogbo, Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract: Electrical resistivity method was used to assess groundwater potential and vulnerability of overburden aquifers at Onibu-Eja active open dumpsite, Osogbo, Southwestern Nigeria. Eighteen Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) points and five 2-D imaging profiles established in five traverses at the periphery of the dumpsite were surveyed and analysed. The subsurface comprised of thin topsoil (resistivity 65 -998 Ωm); heterogeneous weathered layer with resistivity 63 -333 Ωm and thickness 0.7 -8.5 m; weathered basem… Show more

“…Water sources in volcanic areas such as the Mount Batur area are rather difficult to obtain (Ugwu et al, 2016). For this reason, a method is needed to determine the existence of a water source.…”

“…The 1D electrical resistivity technique has been applied in the Caldera of Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra to identify aquifer characteristics [10]. It has also been applied to explore groundwater aquifers and to design geological structures in the Dakhla area of Egypt [11], and to evaluate the potential of groundwater and the vulnerability of aquifers in Nigeria [12]. The first author has previously used this method to investigate the characteristics of groundwater aquifers in a critical land area of the Serayu watershed in Cilacap Regency [13].…”
