Therefore, it can be inferred that Precambrian shears in eastern India might have played a significant role in the separation of Shillong Plateau from the CGGC and is a gap of understanding.…”

“…However, the present continental shelf/slope is far away from this EHZ, locating in the Indian Ocean. The Bengal Basin is largely considered as a remnant ocean basin (Alam et al, 2003; Gani & Alam, 1999, 2003; Ingersoll, Graham, & Dickinson, 1995; Mitchell & Reading, 1986; Naik et al, 1997) wherein, it was essentially a south‐east facing passive margin prior to Tertiary collision (Johnson & Alam, 1991) and the orogenic signature could be depicted through Miocene sedimentation (Uddin & Lundberg, 1998, 2004). Hence, it can be said that since Eocene time, the EHZ progressively shifted towards the south and south‐east due to rapid sedimentation during Miocene uplift of the Himalayas and Indo‐Burma ranges.…”
