Geodiversity assessment of the Xingu drainage basin

Abstract: Geodiversity is a recent concept that refers to the abiotic variety of nature. It is defined as the range of geological (rocks, minerals, fossils), geomorphological (landforms, processes) and soil features, including their assemblages, relationships, properties, interpretation and systems. In this work, a method of quantitative assessment of geodiversity was applied to the Xingu drainage basin (Amazônia -Brazil). The method is based on the quantification and integration of abiotic features represented on thema… Show more

“…Geodiversity encompasses the natural range of physical components of ecosystems, including geological, geomorphological, and pedological (Silva et al, 2013). So far, geodiversity has been mostly studied on large spatial scales, ranging between hillslopes, watersheds, and landforms (Serrano-Cañadas and Ruiz-Flaño, 2007;Jačková and Romportl, 2008;Thomas, 2012).…”

“…The authors concluded that mountains with steep cliffs are more geodiverse areas, exactly where tracks to geotourism are. Silva et al (2013) used a method to quantify geodiversity from river system indicators. Pereira et al (2013) used a method that overrides different abiotic elements across the territory to find indexes of geodiversity throughout Paraná state, Brazil.…”
